Bloxham School was founded in 1860 by The Reverend Philip Egerton, a local Church of England clergyman who wanted to provide an education for young people that was set within a clear and distinct Christian understanding of the world. The school still has this Christian emphasis at its heart and Christian values are one of the five hallmarks upon which the school operates today.

Our five hallmarks are:
A Passion for Learning: Fostering creativity and the capacity for dynamic, independent and critical thought.

A Balanced Curriculum: A challenging academic programme complimented by a broader curriculum which inspires curiosity, rigour and ambition.

A Gold Standard of Pastoral Care: Nurturing the wellbeing of all within the setting of a boarding community.

Christian Values: Nurturing a compassionate spirit so that our pupils become a force for good in an ever-changing world.

The Development of Character: Through promotion of responsibility, generosity, resilience and imagination.

The school’s original buildings were designed by one of the greatest Victorian architects, George Edmund Street. Egerton opened his new school with just one pupil, growing to 180 boys by the time of his retirement in 1886. The school has grown to around 500 today and became fully co-educational in 1998.

Bloxham has a proud musical tradition and an inclusive philosophy which enables a large cross-section of the school to benefit from the many opportunities available. We have healthy numbers of pupils studying GCSE and A Level Music, with recent alumni continuing their studies at the Welsh College of Music, Birmingham Conservatoire, BIMM and Falmouth College.

All genres of music are actively encouraged and celebrated. Music Production lessons are offered alongside tuition in every orchestral instrument as well as in piano, jazz piano, saxophone, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, drum kit, orchestral percussion and voice. The ‘Musicians of the Future’ scheme enables all First Form pupils to learn an instrument for free, in addition to singing in a choir, to foster a love for music early in their time at Bloxham.

The department operates a regular concert series for all ages and abilities in term time alongside other events including the Bloxham Young Musician of the Year competition. Larger music events include the annual Gala Concert and House Music Competition, as well as regular external commitments in London.

Major ensembles include Chapel Choir, Exham Chapel Choir, Concert Band, String Groups, Brass Ensemble, Jazz Band, and many smaller chamber groups, all supported by visiting professional musicians and regular concert trips.

Bloxham has a superb sporting programme. We have first class facilities and talented in-house and external coaches who work with all of our teams. Sport is for the entire Bloxham community, with over 90% of pupils representing the school in competitive fixtures and 100% taking part in three coached sessions every week.

Our Focus Sports across the year are:

· Boys: Rugby, Hockey, Cricket
· Girls: Hockey, Netball, Tennis

Participation sports include badminton, squash, cross-county, basketball, athletics, girls’ cricket, boys’ tennis.

Recreational sports include swimming, gym, fives and sailing.

We have a strong record competing against other schools. We regularly progress to the latter stages of national competitions in hockey and rugby, winning the U18 Schools Plate in 2019, and have enjoyed particular success in country sports including equestrian competitions and clay pigeon shooting, for which we have won the National Clay Pigeon title on numerous occasions.

Our Dewey Sports Centre is home to indoor and outdoor facilities which include: a sports hall, studio, changing rooms, climbing wall, gym & fitness suite, squash courts, astro turfs, hardcourts and grass playing field. Bloxham School also has an indoor swimming pool on the main school site.

Bloxham offers a genuine all-round education which focuses equally on academia and opportunities which extend beyond the classroom, namely our broader curriculum.

With over 100 options, ranging from mainstream sports to minor ones including equestrian and clay pigeon shooting, and from music, drama and art, to astronomy and cooking, we inspire new passions amongst our pupils, allowing them to both experience breadth and develop expertise.

Students in the Sixth Form have the opportunity to strengthen their involvement with a particular club or activity by taking on a leadership role. All Lower Sixth students participate in a year-long service programme alongside their clubs and activities.

Tutors work with pupils to help them select a variety of options to stimulate and challenge from the following categories: Creative Arts, Physical, Outdoor Education, Eunoia (academic enrichment), and Clubs.

Outdoor Education is seen as part of the curriculum and regular activity sessions are available for pupils to learn new skills and develop character, strength and resilience. There are opportunities for all years to join in various outdoor pursuits including climbing, kayaking, Duke of Edinburgh Award and Expeditions to wild areas of the UK, Europe and further afield.

A highlight in the calendar is the whole-school production, which takes place in the Great Hall each Michaelmas Term and draws in a large cast and crew from across the school. Other smaller performances, rehearsals and lessons take place in the Wesley Theatre, a converted chapel, a few minutes walk from the main school site.

LAMDA Speech and Drama examinations are open to all as a paid for activity. A whole host of options are available from Acting to Musical Theatre from Grade 1 to Gold.

A strong number of pupils opt for GCSE Drama and A Level Theatre Studies. Pupils enjoy visits to a range of exciting theatre, with the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company, Warwick Arts Centre and Oxford Playhouse on our doorstep, and London’s West End just an hour’s train journey.

The school seeks to nurture a compassionate spirit in all pupils so that they become a force for good in an ever-changing world. Christian moral values and ethical standards stand at the heart of our school life and are woven into the teaching and pastoral care at Bloxham.

Although the school has been built on a Christian ethos, those of any faith, or none, are welcome at Bloxham and we openly encourage understanding, diversity and tolerance for all.

Regular weekly worship forms an integral part of school life and these services seek to be an opportunity where all pupils and staff can come together as a community, to pause and reflect, to explore and worship.

The school Chaplaincy is available to all pupils and it is a place where they can receive encouragement, explore matters of faith and seek advice. The school Chaplain, Reverend Alexander Ladds, is an ordained member of the Church of England and is available to all the Bloxham community.

We value kindness, compassion and teach our pupils the value of contributing to their community. Our well-supported service programme sees Bloxham pupils volunteer at food banks, care homes and local primary schools each week, giving them a lasting experience of making a difference. They are involved in a wide variety of charity activities.

There are a variety of artistic opportunities open to pupils beyond their normal curriculum involvement. We have excellent facilities for all artistic pursuits including a kiln and a modelling room.

Sculptures in clay and metal adorn the school’s grounds where they have found a permanent exhibition space to be enjoyed by generations of Bloxhamists. Bloxham regularly stages exhibitions of pupils’ work online and around the walls of the school, in addition to adorning school greetings cards and publications, for example the cover of the school’s annual magazine ‘The Bloxhamist’.

We are a fully co-educational school and offer a learning environment in which both girls and boys thrive. The academic component of the Bloxham education is tailored at each stage to help every pupil develop a love of learning whilst reaching their full potential.

Pupils have access to a wide range of support to help with their studies, from weekly meetings with their tutors, through to study skills classes, and receiving subject options and career guidance.

Pupils are stretched through additional challenges in the classroom, prep and our academic enrichment clubs and societies, such as departmental societies and additional GCSE subjects including Mandarin and Astronomy.

We also have a dedicated team to help pupils with a broad range of learning support needs. These range from dyslexia and dyspraxia to visual and hearing impairments, and to supporting those whose first language is not English. Please contact the Admissions team (admissions@bloxhamschool.com) for more specific information regarding learning support.

Bloxham is famous for the quality of its food. Our in-house team prepares all meals in our school kitchen using fresh ingredients. Staff and pupils take lunch together from our servery and eat together in one of our two dining rooms.

There is always a wide choice to meet all tastes with at least three main dishes, including a vegetarian option, a well-stocked salad bar, a pasta bar, soup, fruit and desserts. A range of cooked and cold choices are available for breakfast and those staying for supper will also enjoy a variety of servings, with burger night on a Friday always popular.

The catering team also prepare healthy snacks for the pupils to eat in the houses – fruit, home-made cakes and sandwiches – to supplement the abundant supplies of toast that day and boarding pupils from Third Form upwards can make at break time.

Our chefs also work closely with parents whose children have special dietary needs or allergies. They very soon become familiar with individual pupils and can advise them what they can eat. Chefs will also prepare special meals for those with particular allergies and will take account of this when preparing packed meals for school trips.

Light refreshments and hot and cold drinks can also be purchased from The White Lion Café, a café owned by the school open to pupils and the general public.

Bloxham offers a full or weekly boarding experience; day boarding includes two nights boarding within the fee and entitles pupils to stay for supper and a supervised programme (including prep) until 9.00pm.

Stonehill House is one of our three girls’ boarding houses, whilst there are four boarding houses for boys. The houses are either named after their location, such as Stonehill, or after influential people within Bloxham’s history; for the boys these are Crake, Egerton, Seymour and Wilson and for the girls Raymond and Wilberforce.

The house system at Bloxham provides the foundations for delivering high standards of pastoral care to every pupil. The houses provide a familiar, friendly and supportive base to which pupils return when they are not in lessons or activities.

Each boarding house contains a mix of both full and day boarders and each house year group has a healthy mix of pupils with different interests and qualities. This helps to generate a happy environment and a good standard of competition at inter-house activities, whether in sport or the creative arts.

The Day House was first opened in 2017 and its House name Merton comes from the name previously held by the building. Pupils in Merton House begin the day at 8.15am and end at 6.00pm.

Merton operates as our other senior houses with a Housemaster and tutor team, House captain and Prefects. Pupils participate in the usual range of inter-house competitions and socials.

The house has study rooms, lockers for storing books and belongings, and wash/changing rooms. There are common room areas and small kitchens to make drinks and snacks at break and lunchtimes.

Please note that places for the day house are limited.

What is day boarding?
Day boarding is structured to allow children the opportunity to enjoy boarding life but in a more flexible way that fits in with family life. Pupils board two nights per week and on non-boarding nights stay until 9.00pm for supper and supervised prep.

Can I choose my child’s House?
The allocation of Houses is made by the school to give a mix of strengths and interests across the House groups. We aim for an even split of our current Second Form mixed with new pupils from our 13+ intake to help to integrate our joiners and encourage new friendship groups.

Do pupils share rooms?
Bedrooms are shared dormitories, moving into smaller rooms as they progress further up the school. Single rooms are available in either the Lower or Upper Sixth, depending on the boarding house.

What facilities are available in each house?
In addition to bedrooms, there are shared bathroom facilities and communal spaces from TV rooms to games rooms. There are kitchens which pupils enjoy using to make copious amounts of toast in addition to the wonderful food offered by our catering team.

What happens at the weekend?
The weekend begins with three lessons of Saturday school, followed by sports fixtures. The weekend programme then includes activities or trips on Saturday evening and Sunday. Trips can be local, for example the cinema, or more further afield, for example attractions in London. Social events take place throughout the year such as House dances.

Drama is a very popular subject at Bloxham, run with energy and a focus on building pupils’ confidence and creativity. Pupils throw themselves into the annual inter-house drama competition, with solo and group performances.

Students enjoy greater independence on entering the Sixth Form, with more control and choice over their own studies and the opportunity to stand for roles of responsibility. They are given new privileges and enjoy their own social events throughout the school year.

Over 20 courses are available at A Level, BTEC and CTEC, with most students choosing three post-16 subjects. Courses include: Art, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, D&T: Product Design, Drama & Theatre Studies, Economics, English Literature, English Language and Literature, French, Geography, History, Hospitality, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Photography, Politics, Psychology, Spanish, Textiles and Theology.

In addition to formal qualifications, students are required to undertake an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), a mini Master of Business Administration (MBA), mini Master in Positive Psychology (MAPP), or a Public Speaking course.

Supported by their own dedicated Sixth Form tutor, they are guided through the decisions affecting their life after school, with extensive help to prepare for UCAS applications and interviews.

For entry into the Sixth Form, we require a positive end of school testimonial and normally the securing of a minimum six GCSEs, including Maths and English, at grades 9-5 (or grade equivalent). Certain subjects, for example Mathematics and Sciences, have specific entry requirements.
