Kimbolton is one of the loveliest villages in Cambridgeshire, situated close to the borders of Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire. We are approximately half an hour by road from Cambridge and have excellent connections to Bedford, Milton Keynes, London and beyond.
Our beautiful rural setting, reached via freely running country roads, means that our school is quick and easy to access. By road, we are 10 minutes from the A1, 15 minutes from the A45 and less than 10 minutes from the A14. The nearest railway stations are St Neots, Huntingdon and Bedford, which are served by high speed services to London.

We look forward to welcoming you to our school!

A Sense of Belonging

Throughout our school, our pastoral care is centred on our houses. Ingrams House looks after our 11-13 year olds and provides pastoral care and inter-class competitions based on their form groups. It is a comfortable 'stepping-stone' between the Prep School, or a primary school, and membership of a senior house and it makes the transition to senior school less daunting. From Third Form onwards, pupils join one of our four senior houses: Balyes, Dawsons, Gibbards and Owens.

Small tutor groups with ‘home’ classrooms mean that our tutors get to know their tutees well and give our children a strong sense of belonging from their very first day. Older pupils mentor younger ones, helping them settle in, develop good friendships and support each other.

We are convinced that, as far as practically possible, boys and girls should be educated together. So, all of our houses are mixed; our classes and tutor groups are also mixed. Our house competitions feature mixed teams for the non-sporting events. We believe that this provides the best preparation for the realities of the lives ahead of our pupils. There's plenty of opportunity for 'boys to be boys' and for 'girls to be girls' though!

Academic Excellence

Step into any of our classrooms and you’ll discover a calm, purposeful and friendly space with intellectually curious children and caring, dedicated staff. Our teachers are passionate about their subjects and provide interesting, creative lessons that enthuse pupils to engage fully and achieve their very best. Regular feedback keeps parents informed while pupils are encouraged to reflect, learn from their past efforts and achievements, and hone their learning skills.

Learning isn’t restricted to timetabled lessons though and those with particular interests or abilities are well-catered for.

There are plenty of opportunities to explore beyond the curriculum with research projects, competitions and academic clubs that aim to further stretch and challenge our children.

Our high academic standards and a desire to achieve permeate all levels of our school, resulting in outstanding A Level results and exceptional DfE value added scores in 2018 and 2019. Almost all Sixth Form leavers progress to their universities and courses of choice, with Oxbridge and other Russell Group establishments proving popular destinations. A handful of students in each cohort choose gap years, employment or apprenticeships.

As a digital school, we actively embrace the huge potential of the internet age – while remaining aware of its challenges. All pupils have their own iPads and use them to organise themselves and their notes, to communicate, to study and to collaborate at home and at school.

An Interview with Tilda

Why Kimbolton? Why boarding?
My Dad works in the RAF and moves around a lot so it’s easier for me to be in one place. I came to Kimbolton because my brother was already here and loved it!

What surprised you the most about boarding?
On the Open Day everyone seemed very friendly and this is definitely true.

How do your parents feel about you boarding?
It gives them more free time and although they miss me they know I’m having lots of fun and I talk and FaceTime them lots.
What is it like in your boarding house?

It’s like one big family and everyone is always happy to talk and offer support and advice. Our amazing matron is so supportive and would do anything to help us and make sure we are okay and happy... and manages to get all our washing done in one day... we don’t know how she does it!!

What is life like as a boarder?
Great! I have got to know lots of people in different year groups to me. I have plenty of opportunities to meet up with friends after school or at weekends. There is always someone to talk to in the common room and there are lots of activities organised for us. I like the routine of boarding because it means I definitely get my homework done on time without being distracted!

Developing Life Skills

We aim to produce multi-faceted, interesting and mature young adults who know themselves and are ready and willing to make a positive contribution to society. As such, we place a real emphasis on developing life skills through sustained involvement in extra-curricular and other activities.

We offer a vast range of clubs. By joining in with others, including many outside their own class and year groupings, pupils acquire additional social skills and extra friendships. It also allows our staff to get to know and understand them better.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is open to all children from Third Form (Year 9) and over 75% of our pupils participate, learning new skills, helping others and experiencing adventure. Many achieve the Gold Award before they leave our Sixth Form.

In the Fourth and Fifth Forms, pupils join either our Combined Cadet Force or Community Service Unit and spend their Thursday afternoons serving others while developing valuable life skills. They have the opportunity to gain expertise in areas as varied as first aid, flying, public speaking and leadership, but also learn softer skills such as empathy, reliability, proactivity and decision-making - all invaluable for later life and an essential complement to their academic qualifications.

Food for Body and Soul

Music plays a central role in all our lives and a passion for music lies at the heart of our school. We have a rich, varied and vibrant musical offering.

We encourage students to become actively involved in making their own music, whatever their interests and aspirations. With a team of 26 dedicated musicians on the staff, many of them renowned performers in their fields, we offer coaching in almost every instrument and style, helping to build skills that will enrich lives and potentially fuel a desire for a future career in music.

Alongside the musical content of our curriculum, we offer an exciting mix of individual tuition, ensembles and groups, and performance opportunities that cater for all abilities and tastes. There is truly something for everyone, and for all ages, even if they join us with no prior musical training.

Our pupils enjoy their lessons and enjoy learning and developing their skills, knowledge and understanding of music. We give them a safe environment to take risks in their learning and praise and reward them for doing so. The results and the volume of pupils engaged in music at Kimbolton School speak for themselves.

Food for Body and Soul

Our talented and enthusiastic catering team provides delicious, nutritious and plentiful meals with choices to suit everyone. The menus are interesting and exciting and designed to tempt even the most reluctant palate into action!

At lunchtime, there are hot and cold options, freshly made breads and lots of interesting salads and sides. As much as possible is made on-site, using fresh, local ingredients. Everyone has lunch, taking time to pause in the middle of their busy day and meaning that they are fully fuelled for the afternoon ahead.

Day pupils can extend their day at school by joining our boarders for breakfast and/or dinner, a great help for many working parents. Boarding pupils enjoy themed nights such as Hallowe’en or Chinese New Year, with matching menus and decorations, plus regular special meals that enhance the family feel of our boarding houses.

Joining our Senior School

Kimbolton Castle and Kimbolton School can both be traced back for centuries in the history books. Learn how the two became intertwined in this potted history.

Joining our Senior School

With almost 800 pupils, our Senior School is large enough to offer a wide range of opportunities yet small enough to deliver personal encouragement to each child. Everyone is recognised and known, teachers work together to ensure that pupils are correctly supported, and we engender a real sense of community that many families feel extends well beyond our gates.

Just as success in adulthood is about achieving a work-life balance, so success at Kimbolton is about both academic and personal development. We pride ourselves in stretching and challenging each and every one of our pupils but also equipping them with strategies to cope when the pressure is on. What’s more, we encourage them to get involved in many different spheres so it is not unusual to see the same child excelling in extra-curricular sport, music, drama and academic pursuits. It all adds up to a busy and fulfilling education in which all success is celebrated and everyone is encouraged and allowed to be themselves.

My Typical Day - Charlie, Third Form

7:30am: Wake up, the bell is rung by one of the First to Third Formers on duty. We all get ready for school and meet downstairs to grab our snack for break time. Living in a boarding house with mixed year groups means you easily make friends - there’s always someone to hang out with in the house, or in school breaks.

8:00am: Walk to breakfast, which is in the school dining hall. This is a good opportunity to catch up with friends from the girls’ house, especially if you have siblings.

8:40am: Tutor time, followed by normal lessons.

11:00am: Break time.

11:20am: Lessons continue until lunchtime.

1:10pm: Lunch.

2:10pm: Afternoon lessons.

4:20pm: End of the school day. People are in and out of the house at this time. Some are grabbing a snack and others are heading to clubs. I’m happy I can do all the sports I want to after school – I’m always occupied! Even if you don’t have anything on, there will likely be some sort of discussion, games or TV watching in the common room and there’s always someone around to chat to. At weekends there is a lot on offer - perhaps a trip to 'Rumble' live outdoor gaming at Grafham Water, a football match, or a barbeque. I often meet up with friends from the local area too.

6:00pm: Supper at the dining hall, and then free time before prep (homework).

7:00-8:30pm/9.00pm: Prep. First to Third Formers work in the prep room, often with a Sixth Form volunteer or teacher on duty to help. However, if you’re Fourth Form or above you can do your prep in your own room. A duty member of staff comes round to see if we are all OK (and to check we are working!). Being a boarder gives you lots of responsibilities and independence which I quite like.

8.30pm (9.00pm for Fourth Form upwards): Free time. Depending on the day, there’ll be an activity, for example. a fun competition, playing a board game, team sports, or watching a film. This is also a chance to do something by yourself, like reading a book or playing an instrument. A highlight of boarding for me was realising I could watch every football match on Sky Sports and BT Sports in the common room!
9.30pm onwards: Get ready for bed. The time changes according to what year you’re in.

Our Boarding Family

Boarding at Kimbolton is a rich and rewarding experience within our close-knit school and village communities. We offer the security of living in a friendly rural village, yet are within easy reach of Cambridge and London, and provide activities and trips every weekend to ensure that our boarders experience life beyond our gates. We offer boarding from age 11. As well as full boarding, when there is space we also offer weekly, flexi- and occasional boarding. Subject to a quick call beforehand, parents are always welcome to visit their children or take them for a short trip away.

Our boarding houses are located on Kimbolton village's historic and beautiful High Street, and back onto the school grounds. The boys live in Kimbolton House while the girls are a few doors further along in White House. Both houses have a rich history and are full of character yet have modern facilities that meet the needs of today's teenagers.

There is a relaxed family atmosphere in both boarding houses. We encourage children to personalise their rooms and to treat the houses like home while respecting the needs of others. Younger boarders share rooms while older ones have study bedrooms more akin to university accommodation.

With our full programme of activities, nurturing environment and individual attention, our boarding houses provide a true home-from-home at an affordable price.

Practical and Useful Learning

Our curriculum balances traditional academic subjects with more technical and creative ones such as Design Technology Engineering (DTE), Computer Science, Art and Food & Nutrition. In the first three years at Senior School, everyone gets the chance to develop their abilities in these areas, explore their creativity and find out where their interests lie - all while gaining useful life skills.
HTMLText_F8617A52_CF49_5C43_41DB_785B117F0F6B.html =

Sporting Opportunities

We pride ourselves on the variety of sports and activities available to our pupils. Facilitated by an encouraging, experienced and committed staff, including professional coaches such as Alex Tudor (former England cricketer), Clare Glover and Chris Hope (both ex-professional footballers), our games activities offer something for everyone.

With fixtures for all ages and abilities, every child has the opportunity to experience representing their school in competitive matches. The most able also participate in local, regional and national tournaments and competitions - or even play representative sport at county, regional or national level - and add to our long track record of success.

Sport is important for physical and mental wellbeing, yet not everyone is attracted to the competitive games field. From Third Form (Year 9) we offer outdoor pursuits as an alternative, with sailing at nearby Grafham Water and canoeing on both our onsite ponds and the River Great Ouse a few miles away. Inter-school matches for the sailors, and the challenge of the 125-mile Devizes to Westminster canoe marathon for the most experienced paddlers, ensure that there’s still plenty of opportunity for competition.

From Fifth Form (Year 11) we extend our games options to include golf, fitness sessions, swimming, Pilates and plenty more, so that everyone finds a physical activity that they can enjoy long into adulthood.

Spotlight on Talent

When it comes to putting on a show, we think big and aim high!

Every year we stage a major production plus a junior play. Everyone is encouraged to get involved, be it on stage, in the band, or behind the scenes. There is even a student director helping to pull it all together. Recent productions have included Les Misérables, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Sound of Music. Some have been compared favourably by professional reviewers to their West End counterparts - what an accolade!

We also stage regular concerts and recitals, either here, in the Lewis Hall, or in the stunning Saloon of the Castle. The inter-House music competition showcases individuals and ensembles, with the keenly-fought choir category calling on everyone to contribute their voices. Termly concerts shine the spotlight on our musicians, giving them the opportunity to share the joy of their music-making with their friends and families. Finally, lunchtime concerts are more intimate events, with children playing for smaller audiences of their peers and staff.
