Boarding Q&A: Holly and CeCe, Sixth Form

Why Kimbolton, why boarding?

[CeCe] After moving between countries a lot my parents thought it would be better for me to stay at one school for my secondary education and not have to change again.

[Holly] My mum and uncle went to Kimbolton and I was happy to follow in their footsteps!

What surprised you the most about boarding?

[Holly] How easy it was to settle in.

[CeCe] How quickly I felt part of the boarding family.

Highlight of boarding so far?

[Holly] Cluedo at the castle - we all dressed up for a candlelit dinner in the Saloon, followed by a live version of the board game around the castle.

[CeCe] All the weekend activities, such as visiting Alton Towers.

What are three benefits you've gained from boarding?

[Holly] I’ve learned to be resilient, how to manage my time better, and that you don’t have to be in the same year as other people in order to be friends.

[CeCe] Tolerance of people, independence, and making close friends that will last a lifetime.

How would you describe boarding at Kimbolton?

[Holly] Small but fun-packed.

[CeCe] A close family atmosphere.

Top tip for a new Sixth Form boarder?

[Holly] Get involved in everything you can – you only get out what you put in.

[CeCe] There’s a great social life in the House but ensure you set aside time for studying too; try to keep a healthy work-life balance.

Boarding Q&A: Lavigne, Sixth Form

Why Kimbolton, why boarding?

I chose Kimbolton because it is a co-ed school and it has a castle which I thought was cool. I board because I am an overseas student.
What surprised you the most about boarding?
That I could meet people from so many other countries, and also how friendly everyone is. When I joined Kim House in Third Form the older students helped me to settle in and make friends; I now try to do the same for younger pupils - I believe as Sixth Formers we have the responsibility to be good role models for them.
What do you do after-school and in the evenings?
If I don’t have to attend a music lesson (I play the violin and piano), I usually just hang out and chat in the common room. In the evenings, after prep, I like returning to the common room to see what’s going on and possibly join in, or use the kitchen to cook if I’m hungry.
What benefits have you experienced as a result of boarding?

I have been able to befriend people that I would not normally encounter at all, let alone talk regularly everyday with. The availability of the Sports Hall several times a week also gives me motivation to do more exercise than I usually would at home, since it is more fun with other boarders. If I am stuck on some schoolwork, boarding has also allowed me to ask older students for help, which is very useful.
How do you feel boarding is preparing you for life after school?

I’ve learned to appreciate that living in the same household with many others requires a lot of consideration for other people. I have also become accustomed to interacting with my seniors and juniors, which I am sure will be useful in future workplaces.
How would you sum up boarding at Kimbolton?

An overall great experience in a very friendly and welcoming community. Just come board, it’s good fun!

Confidence to Be Yourself

Preparing our Sixth Form students to move on from school is an important part of our role. Personal attributes such as resilience, perseverance, initiative, and an ability to work well with others are all encouraged both in the classroom, and through our extra-curricular programme. Thursday afternoon extension courses offer further opportunities for personal development, with options including Combined Cadet Force, Community Service Unit, cooking for life, psychology, and debating. Many students also take on significant leadership roles within the school, for example, head boy and girl, our prefect team, sports, music, and games captains.

All of this is enhanced by our 'Preparing for Citizenship' course, with weekly lectures delivered by visiting speakers and staff specialists. These are designed to broaden every student’s perspective on life, with topics ranging from world and social issues to personal concerns such as driver safety, digital footprint, and maintaining good mental health.

Expanding Academic Horizons

Through our ‘7th period super-curriculum’ Sixth Formers gain wider study skills and academic interests that help them stand out from the crowd. Alongside visiting speakers and optional academic subject trips, these weekly one-hour enrichment sessions offer our A Level students the chance to explore individual passions and to create something interesting, different and eye-catching for their portfolios.
All of our academic departments offer a range of exciting 7th period options to choose from. Design and build a racing car for the ‘F1 in Schools’ competition, present your scientific research project at the Cambridge Science Fair, or debate current geographical issues such as migration and fracking. Our mathematicians use applied mathematics to build a trebuchet - with a competition to see which one can fire a tennis ball the furthest from the Castle!

Many students also take an Extended Project Qualification during their Lower Sixth year. This provides the opportunity to conduct independent research on a topic of particular interest and is a useful qualification for university applications.

Find Your Voice

Good communication is an essential life skill, and we encourage all Sixth Formers to take advantage of opportunities for creative expression. The Lewis Hall hosts major concerts, productions, and visiting speakers throughout the year, alongside assemblies and House competitions.

Through music, drama, dance, debating and public speaking, we aim to help each student find their unique voice, in a supportive and encouraging environment. Whether taking a role in a school production, playing an instrument, presenting a sports report, or debating at a Model United Nations event, the thrill of performing well and the camaraderie of working together is an invaluable experience.
HTMLText_FA9393CC_CF48_EC47_41E8_21B6B5324D9A.html =

Freedom to Choose

There are no restrictions to the combination of A Level subjects you can choose, allowing you to take control of your academic destiny. You will be studying your chosen subjects in greater depth than at GCSE, and in smaller groups of approximately 8-12 students. Some teaching takes place inside the Castle, with additional classrooms in the Donaldson and Queen Katharine Building (QKB).

The state of the art QKB includes the William Brown Lecture Theatre, as well as 12 science laboratories, offering outstanding facilities in which to study STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). There are two Sixth Form work rooms in the Castle for private study, or students can work in departmental areas. The Vanbrugh Library also offers an ideal space for study, as well as access to a wide range of resources.

Get Fit or Compete - Outdoor Pursuits

Kimbolton School is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Recognised Training Centre and is affiliated to British Canoeing. Our canoe team competes regularly in marathon races, notably the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race (DW) – ‘the canoeist’s Everest’ - and we have a strong record of success in this sphere. Recreational canoeing is also available during games afternoons in the summer term.

Nearby Grafham Water Sailing Club is home to our large, modern fleet of sailing dinghies. These include Picos, Lasers, Fireflies, 2000s, Dart 16 catamarans and the ultimate test of ability – the 29er! Students can opt to learn to sail, or improve their skills on the water, during their games periods. Team sailors additionally train at weekends and take part in a variety of regional and national competitions organised by the British Schools Dinghy Racing Association and National School Sailing Association. Our holiday sailing trips are popular, most recently to Portland, Dorset.

Get Fit or Compete - Sport

We aim to cater for as many different sporting interests and ability levels as possible. Our team of professional coaches help our students either develop an existing talent or find their sporting passion – whether that be playing 1st team Cricket or enjoying recreational Pilates. There are plenty of opportunities to represent the school in competitive fixtures, but equally important is establishing an active, healthy lifestyle.

The main sports for girls are hockey, netball and tennis, and for boys are football, hockey and cricket. Tennis for boys and rounders for girls accompany these during the summer term. We also offer an array of other sports including: athletics, badminton, canoeing, circuit training, climbing, girls’ cricket, girls’ football, fitness, gymnastics, Pilates, rowing, sailing, shooting, squash, table tennis, swimming and horse-riding. These activities are available either during games sessions or within our extra-curricular programme. Foreign sports trips, such as our recent South Africa Tour, have proved highly popular.

Good Food, Music and Times

Our talented and enthusiastic catering team provides delicious, nutritious and plentiful meals with choices to suit everyone. As much as possible is made on-site, using fresh, local, seasonal ingredients.

At lunchtime, there are hot and cold options, freshly made breads and lots of salads and sides. Day pupils have the option to extend their time at school by joining our boarders for breakfast and dinner. Boarding pupils often enjoy themed nights such as Hallowe’en or Chinese New Year, with matching menus and decorations.

Good Food, Music, and Times

The Music School is accommodated in the attractive Mews Quad and boasts excellent teaching, rehearsal, ICT and recording facilities. It’s a bustling corner of the campus and those new to the school are encouraged to pay it a visit. As well as individual tuition, our many groups and ensembles cover a wide range of orchestral and band instruments, plus choirs. Students taking outside music lessons are also very welcome to get involved.

The year starts with our Senior House Music Competition, an event that sees every Sixth Former on stage. It includes an inter-House singing evening, as well as solo and ensemble performances. We also offer a busy programme of concerts, from orchestral and choral evenings to informal lunchtime concerts held in the Castle Saloon. All are welcome to perform or watch. Over a third of Kimbolton students learn an instrument or take singing lessons – it is never too late to become one of them.

Our Boarding Family

Boarding at Kimbolton is a rich and rewarding experience. Our two characterful boarding houses – Kimbolton House (boys) and White House (girls) – are located on the historic High Street and back onto the school grounds. As well as providing a welcoming transition into Sixth Form, being in the boarding house is an opportunity to meet pupils from all year groups, helping newcomers to settle in quickly.

Both of our boarding Houses offer a relaxed family environment and a full programme of weekend activities, providing a true home-from-home. Choose from a range of cost-effective options: we offer full, weekly, flexi and occasional boarding.

Ready for a Life Adventure!

You will find that our high academic standards and your desire to achieve become a winning combination, encouraging you to truly achieve your best. Each year, our students achieve outstanding A Level results and we were awarded exceptional DfE value added scores in 2018 and 2019.

When it comes to looking at your post-18 choices, we will help you explore your options, assist with your applications, provide interview practice and more. Almost all our Sixth Form leavers progress to their universities and courses of choice, with Oxbridge and other Russell Group establishments proving popular destinations. A handful of students in each cohort choose gap years, employment or apprenticeships.

We are proud to have many thousands of alumni around the world, a diverse and inspiring network of people who share a deep affinity for the education and experiences they gained at Kimbolton. We love hearing from our former students – many of whom go on to enjoy success in every imaginable field: science, the arts, medicine, sports, business, public life and more.

The Old Kimboltonians' Association (OKA) provides an invaluable link between former students and our school through social events, sports fixtures and annual reunions. Here we showcase some of our leavers and what they have gone on to achieve…

Whether continuing with us from Fifth Form or joining us from another school, rest assured you’ll have the support you need to make new friends, settle in and flourish.

Good Food, Music and Times
