Burton Hall

The Burton Hall is the Dining Hall for all boys at the Grammar School. The boys are served their lunch from the Servery between 13:10 and 14:10. This allows plenty of time for fitting in a hot meal and lunchtime activities and clubs.

Boys can select their lunch from a wide choice of menu styles including hot meals, salad bar, pasta or baguette bar and a selection of puddings and fruit. Fresh food is delivered from local suppliers and the professional kitchen has a 5-star food hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency.

Chemistry Lab

Our expertise in STEM subjects owes much to the considerable investment in recent years in laboratory facilities and the knowledge and skill of our teachers, not forgetting of course the entrepreneurial instincts and intellectual risk-taking of our boys.

In 2017, two of our boys won the national Big Bang competition and were recognised as the ‘UK Young Engineers of the Year’ for their wearable vest called E1, which alerts epilepsy sufferers about a possible attack minutes before it hits. As well as being invited back to present the awards the following year, the boys also gave a speech in front of more than 400 dignitaries at the evening dinner. Since their win, Team E1 have competed in STEM competitions in China and Estonia and held discussions with Epilepsy UK on how to prepare their innovation for clinical trials. They have also assisted the judges on future Big Bang competitions, and are hoping to become STEM ambassadors on outreach programmes for the RAF and BAE Systems.

In 2019, one Year 9 pupil from the Grammar School and two Year 10 pupils from the High School were also awarded the accolade of ‘UK Young Engineers of the Year’ for their project Music Splash which is an app providing analysis of music performance when playing an instrument, and therefore guiding the musician to precision and the most accurate technique.

The Grammar School has had considerable success for several years with the TeenTech competitions where boys work in groups on STEM innovation. This success has given boys priceless opportunities to address the country’s scientists at the Royal Society.

Classroom

Loughborough Grammar School is proud of its outstanding academic achievements however the boys results are not limited by the School timetable. We hope that in addition to academic studies, the huge range of academic extension activities provided through the school day and after-school, will provide the boys with the skills and qualifications required to fulfil their future ambitions.

Design & Technology

Creativity and innovation are at the heart of Design & Technology and pupils are encouraged to take risks through developing their initiative. Requiring a multitude of skills, they are equipped for various career paths. From communicating ideas to project management, pupils are prepared for many future avenues.

Drama

Drama at the Grammar School fosters a safe learning environment in which boys are encouraged to develop transferable skills and qualities for later life. These include communication, compromise, negotiation, problem solving, teamwork, creativity, leadership and risk-taking. Drama stimulates lively debate, creativity and allows pupils to explore issues and experiences that affect them day to day.
Enrichment activities include; School Productions, Shakespeare Schools project, New Directors’ Season, Theatre trips and BrightLights Workshops.

Les Miserables Senior Musical Production was performed in March as part of the Loughborough Grammar School’s celebration of the 525 year anniversary. As part of the 500 year commemorations, the entire School plus alumni, visited the West End to see a (then) new show called Les Mis. It was the single biggest booking in the West End and was therefore a simple choice for a show for the 525th year.

Headmaster's Welcome

Welcome to Loughborough Grammar School.

Loughborough Grammar School is a school where academic achievement is at the centre of everything we do.

Dedicated staff and outstanding resources enable boys both to fulfil their potential in examinations and to embark on intellectual adventures beyond the classroom.

We strongly believe that pupils benefit from a well-rounded education, which is why it is important that every boy has the opportunity to discover passions that he will retain beyond his school days and into adult life.

Sixth Form

Life in the Grammar School Sixth Form is an exciting and independent step forward towards our boys’ future careers and goals. As well as excellent academic provision and small-group teaching, Sixth Formers have more flexibility to undertake independent study and get involved in a greater range of extra-curricular endeavours. In the Sixth Form Centre, students can find a balance of work life and relaxation in a mature environment as they develop the skills and relationships that will carry them into life beyond Loughborough Grammar School.

Grammar School Sixth Formers have their own common room centre, greater freedoms and growing responsibilities for their learning, their chosen career path and as role models to the younger boys. It is a hugely rewarding, intensely engaging and happy two years, amongst a close-knit community dedicated to preparing young men for the challenges that await them.

There is a breadth of sports on offer to all pupils and these include; Rugby, Hockey, Cross-country, Football, Basketball, Badminton, Swimming, Water Polo, Fencing,Table Tennis, Climbing, Squash, Cricket, Athletics, Tennis and Golf.

The value of reading is central to a Grammar School education and our well-stocked library fully supports this ethos. For boys of all ages, it provides inspirational book choices, as well as a contemplative space with a quiet atmosphere where reading and studying can grow into a rewarding hobby and habit.

The Tower

Loughborough Grammar School is one of the ten oldest independent schools in the country, able to trace its origins back to 1495 when the estate of Thomas Burton, a local wool merchant, made the bequest that founded the School in Loughborough’s Parish Church.

2020 is the Grammar School’s 525th anniversary and whilst we are proud to be able to look back over 500 years, LGS is anything but old school in the opportunities, facilities and teaching that is provided for boys aged 10 - 18 years. It is a School where boys are empowered to succeed and to enjoy a thoroughly modern learning experience, developing the emotional intelligence required for success in both their personal and private lives.

History and tradition however do remain very much a part of what the Grammar School is and what makes an education at the School such a unique and enriching experience.

GREAT Men

At the Grammar School we are not just educating our boys, we are helping them to grow into men. Our GREAT Men initiative is about drawing our community together to talk meaningfully about masculinity.

We want our boys to grow into men who are good role models, resilient and tough, emotionally aware and open to talking and listening respectfully and positively.

Our aim is for our boys to be confident young men who emerge from school steadfast in who they are and in the values that they embody, ready to take their rightful place in the world and to make a difference through how they live their lives.

We have started the conversation; we are talking together and encouraging each other; Our boys are becoming GREAT Men.
