Art and Design

The Art Department is housed in three impressive Art Studios, and is serviced by a range of specialist spaces, including a print area, dark room, and kiln room. Students in their final year have dedicated studio spaces and are encouraged to pursue their own individual practice in preparation for art school.

We teach a diverse range of specialisms, and our students are able to develop their work to a high level in painting, textiles, fashion, ceramics, printmaking, photography, and sculpture. We take a broad, student-centred approach, whereby our curriculum teaching is enhanced by an exciting supra-curricular programme. We run additional evening and weekend classes and workshops, working with artists and craftspeople to give greater breadth and depth to the student experience. From animators and filmmakers to ceramicists and bookbinders, the students have the opportunity to work with an ever-evolving team of professionals working in the creative industries.

Although our Art Department is forward-looking and embraces digital and new media, we also underpin our practice with a strong belief in drawing. We run weekly life drawing classes, and weekend masterclasses in drawing and oil painting from the model.

The main Art Studio is a creative hub for all year groups, open daily from 7.30am to 9pm; students have open access and are able to drop in during any free time for help and support, or to work on personal projects. There are also opportunities for travel; recent art trips have included Venice and New York, supplemented by regular visits to London Art galleries.

Boarding

Boarding comes in different shapes and sizes at Roedean.

Students might decide to dip their toes into boarding by starting with weekly or flexi-boarding, staying at School for three-five nights per week, or they might decide to full board, 7 nights a week.

Weekly boarding is becoming increasingly popular with families who live in London or in Sussex and Surrey. It means that students can get the most out of the educational and co-curricular opportunities from Monday to Friday, and then return home at the weekends. If they live in London, they can join the ‘Victoria Escort’, which means that they are chaperoned on the short train journeys between Brighton and London Victoria, and back, by a member of staff.

Many girls, however, are full boarders, and there are over 250 girls on site at the weekends, so they have plenty of company if they choose full boarding.

Whichever students choose, they will have a dedicated bedroom in the House where they can leave their possessions, even when they are not staying overnight.

In addition to their bedroom, there are a variety of spaces where students can work or relax, play games, or practise the piano. In each house, there is an ODR (the Old Dining Room), perhaps the symbolic heart of each house, where students can just catch up with their friends at the end of the day. There is also the GDR (the so-called Girls’ Dining Room, although it is now a common room), where there is a television and DVD player, and the Hobbies Room which has a selection of games and puzzles to enjoy in the evening.

Students are be fed very well in the Main Dining Room for all meals, but also have the option of making toast or preparing pasta in the evening, and this can be done in the pantry kitchen which is next to the ODR, where there are cookers, hobs, and fridges, or in the ‘snug areas’ on the lower and middle corridors.

Co-Curricular Opportunities

The Roedean package is much more than just work. Our all-embracing education goes far beyond excellent academic results, and our students flourish in an environment which is challenging and supportive. We know that if they are happy in their environment, they will be successful in a variety of different spheres of school life. The wide range of co-curricular activities on offer at School will complement their academic work, and successes in one area often build confidence to be successful in another. At Roedean, we emphasise the importance of a balanced experience.

Alongside the all-important academic subjects, a diverse range of activities are open to the girls, in order to ensure that they are challenged and stimulated in their free time, so that they can discover their talents and passions, and there is an extensive co-curricular programme of Arts, Performing Arts, Music, Sport, and Cultural Activities from which to choose. In addition, there are enrichment opportunities in all subject areas running at lunchtime and after School. We do encourage every girl to participate in a selection of these activities to complement and contrast with her academic studies.

Co-Curricular Sport and Fitness

At Roedean, Sport is for everyone. To ensure that all the girls develop a passion for sport, and will continue with it later in life, we endeavour to offer the widest range of activities and opportunities possible.

Our Sports Department has recently expanded: the specialisms we offer are netball, hockey, football, tennis, swimming, athletics, gymnastics, golf, cricket, and off-site horse-riding and sailing. Our sports offer also includes badminton, strength and conditioning, martial arts, yoga, trampolining, volleyball, and Zumba. We are constantly expanding to include those activities which the girls would like to pursue.

Every student also has access to the gym, be that at a specific time for the younger years, who can use it during supervised sessions, to a range of times for the older years, after school for the boarders, or in their PE lessons.

We understand that exercise complements all other aspects of school life, and try hard to make sure that they can all coexist well.

From our elite-level sports women to girls who just enjoy getting involved, we have weekly fixtures to ensure that there is a strongly competitive edge at all levels, and a programme of house matches and competitions which enable every single girl to take part in sport.

Whether part of one of the many sports squads, clubs, the Sport Scholars’ Programme, or community partnerships, sport is a vital part of life at Roedean and the wider community.

Cricket at Roedean

The Cricket Pavilion was designed by Gilbert Murray Simpson, brother to the school architect, Sir John Simpson. It was donated in 1912 by former pupil F E Abbott.

We currently have the use of three indoor nets, one outdoor grass square and two astroturf wickets, which are used for training and which allow us to play two fixtures adjacent to each other on our main cricket field. A generous parental donation allowed the astroturf wickets to be laid, the cricket pavilion to be refurbished and for the cages to be purchased, alongside lots of additional coaching and playing equipment, to ensure the girls have access to fantastic equipment and facilities

One hundred and thirty girls have played cricket at Roedean since January last year and thirty cricket fixtures were planned for summer 2020 (up from 11 in 2018). This figure will continue to rise, and we will look to introduce some high profile fixtures, particularly against the Women’s MCC.

For the first time, The Cricketer magazine’s Schools Guide this year published a section featuring all girls schools and Roedean was included in the Top 20.

Design and Technology

The Design and Technology Department sits between Science and the Farm, just behind the main building. The department houses a range of machinery and hand tools, including a high-spec laser-cutter and 3D-printer. The room also has a full desktop computer suite to provide students with the opportunity to work in CAD, graphics, and publishing programmes.

DT is a dynamic subject, and students learn in a workshop environment to gain knowledge and experience of working with different materials, including timber, metal, polymers, paper and card, textiles, and composite materials.

The DT curriculum covers structures, systems, mechanisms, electronics, and programming, where students are guided through the process of taking an initial idea through to a completed product. The department also develops students in design and manufacturing skills, including Computer-Aided Design and Manufacture to create laser-cut and 3D-printed material to incorporate into final products.

DT is offered to GCSE level. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, students are taught the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to engage in the process of designing and making. Using creativity and imagination, they design and make products within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants, and values. The girls acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on a range of disciplines, such as Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Computing, and Art. They learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising, and capable citizens.

The GCSE course enables students to follow an iterative design process to give an opportunity to investigate, design, and make products that satisfy real wants and needs.

DT is great for students who enjoy a hands-on approach to learning, with opportunities to work with a range of materials and tools, enabling them to be creative and innovative with their ideas.

Since 2017, the DT and Physics Departments have provided Roedean girls with the fantastic opportunity to design, build, and race an electric car. This has been an exciting STEM project which has given students an opportunity to learn skills in engineering, design, and manufacture, as well as being part of a team of drivers and pit crew at a real car-racing event.

In the first year, students assembled the basic car from a kit. This involved assembling many complex parts, as well as wiring intricate electrical circuits. The girls then raced this car at Goodwood motor circuit, along with 50 other local schools and colleges. In subsequent years, students improved the speed and performance of the car by changing the wheels, the transmission sprocket ratios, and the car body material. We provided training in Computer-Aided Design, which enabled girls to design specific components and manufacture these on the 3D printer. Some girls constructed and programmed the ‘e-chook’, an Arduino-based computer which enables diagnostics of the car performance to be monitored.

This has been a genuinely exciting project which students have thoroughly enjoyed. We hope to continue racing the car in the future and to inspire the next generation of engineers.

History of the School

Founded in 1885 by sisters Penelope, Dorothy and Millicent Lawrence, Roedean School was originally known as Wimbledon House and based at 25 Lewes Crescent in Kemp Town, Brighton, with 10 pupils.

From humble beginnings, school numbers grew, and the search began for a new site. The foundation stone for Roedean School was laid on 26 July 1897 and the school moved to its current location in 1898-1899. Designed by Sir John Simpson in a free Jacobean style, the original Main School building remains faithful to his vision. Other buildings were added to the site later, including the Chapel, Junior House, now known as Keswick House, the San, now Lawrence House, and the New Wing, all sympathetic to the original design.

Simpson’s daughter, Clara, was a Roedean pupil in the late 1800s and, to commemorate her happy time here, he designed a Sun Dial which can still be seen at the front of the Quad.

The School House clock was also part of his original design, and is inscribed with the motto ‘perevnt et impvtantvr’ which translates approximately to ‘The hours expire but are laid to our account’.

Horizons Café

Horizons Café is located near Keswick and the Sixth Form Centre, providing delicious and nutritious hot and cold snacks and beverages, and a café area for girls and staff. It can also be used as an informal meeting space. There is also a well-stocked shop, where girls can pick up a wide range of everyday items, such as toiletries and stationery.

Although Horizons accepts cash purchases, to reduce the need for students to have large amounts of money in School, we have a cashless system for the café. Students can have a personal swipe card, which can be loaded with an allocated sum of money to spend in the café.

Free Time and Boarding

Keswick Common Room is a place for study, socialising and toastie making! By day, students have ‘kitchen table’ debates with their peers as they discuss issues sparked by their A Level studies or current affairs, relax on the sofa with friends or watch TV. During boarding hours, the common room becomes a vibrant communal room, where students can cook, and gather together to form long-lasting friendships which is crucial for a happy school life. This social area encourages pupils to mix with a variety of cultural backgrounds and facilitates many activities, from high-energy games to relaxation. This space is an integral part of boarding life and makes the boarding house a closer and more inclusive community.

The social life in the Sixth Form is varied, with lots of choice. It affords the perfect opportunity to develop the independence students will need to be ready for university living, whilst also being a supportive atmosphere in which they can learn to be themselves. The Snow Ball, Casino Night and the Leavers’ Ball are annual highlights only available to the Sixth Form. For boarders, a part of each evening and some time at weekends will be spent on individual study, but boarders are also able to access the fitness suite, swimming pool and full catering on site, or to relax with a movie with friends in the boarding house. A wide range of activities such as Go-Karting, horse riding, cinema trips and excursions can be attended.

During the War, a party of 50 girls were evacuated to Edgehill School in Canada and a smaller group later moving on to Monticello College in Illinois. At the same time, the remaining girls took over the Keswick Hotel in Cumbria, where they remained for the duration of the war. In 1998, Junior House was renamed Keswick House, to commemorate the School’s time in the Lake District. It then became a boarding house for Sixth Form girls.

Music at Roedean

Music at Roedean is lively, engaging, and accomplished. Within the curriculum, it is fun, involves everybody, and has a lasting effect on the students’ appreciation of an extensive range of musical styles, through the key skills of performing, composing, and listening. Many take the subject to GCSE and A Level, achieving excellent results.

Many girls in the School learn one or two instruments, and specialist tuition is given in piano, organ, all orchestral instruments, saxophone, guitar, orchestral percussion, drum kit, solo singing, and more, and ABRSM exams are held each term, with many Roedean musicians regularly gaining distinctions. Some pupils also attend Saturday music colleges in London.

A wide range of ensembles come together every week, including Roedean Symphony Orchestra, Strings Orchestra, the Guitar Ensemble, Concert Band, the Roedean School Choir, as well as a number of chamber groups, such as a Piano Trio and two String Quartets.

Roedean arranges a huge number of events, concerts, masterclasses, and workshops each year, both in School and at many venues locally and beyond; we encourage musicians of all ages to enjoy performing and to develop their individual talents to a high standard in informal teatime recitals, as well as more formal full-scale concerts.

Our most prestigious concert, held in the Chapel, opens the Brighton Festival Fringe each year and brings over 140 musicians together, from the School and the local area, with a capacity audience of well over 350.

Our musicians regularly go on to study Music after School, including at Oxford, Birmingham, Cardiff, Bristol, York, the Royal Academy of Music, and Trinity Laban.

Pathways and Enrichment

At Roedean, the girls have the opportunity to develop a truly bespoke pathway through the Sixth Form that enhances their A Level study, preparing them for university and life beyond Roedean through our Pathways Programme. This involves a choice of lectures and electives that are related to their subject interests or career aspirations. This discrete element of enrichment for the Sixth Form is also complemented by the School’s co-curricular programme.

During the year, Sixth Formers can attend a lectures by an industry expert, Old Roedeanian, or member of staff in one of the four pathways:

Creative and Performing Arts
Economics, Business and Enterprise
Society
STEM
There are three or four lectures from which they may select one related to their chosen ‘pathway’ or one that might be of interest from a different pathway.

Sixth Form Electives

The lectures are complemented by the student’s choice of elective. Each elective is an 8-week programme that runs across the Autumn and Spring Terms for Year 12 students. They are designed to stretch and challenge the students’ thinking and academic experience beyond their A Level courses, and they can either be from a career ‘pathway’ or just taken for interest. There are no restrictions on entry to an elective. In the Spring and Summer Terms, Year 12 students may opt into an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) or compete in national essay-writing competitions.

Set at the stunning interface between the South Downs National Park and the English Channel, the Roedean Farm provides learners with a unique experience of the exquisite local ecology. Our Farm is home to 14 chickens, 14 sheep, 5 goats, and 4 ducks. The aim of the Farm is wide-reaching: to develop an awareness of farming and livestock; to encourage outdoor pursuits; to promote sustainable farming and ecology; to raise awareness about the environment, agriculture and food production; to give opportunities and training for the care and handling of animals; and to ensure animal welfare through training and guidance.

Providing genuine opportunities for compassion is also at the heart of our Farm philosophy, and all tutor groups are encouraged to take on farming responsibilities to promote these values across the School.

The foundations of conservation and sustainable farming practice underpin all educational activities on the Farm. Biodiversity surveys, the impact of grazing, and other conservation projects are tied into the academic profile of the Biology, Geography, and PSHE curriculum areas. Students who attend the Farm experience a wide range of co-curricular activities relating to issues of sustainability and conservation. Developing partnerships with local schools will provide opportunities for widening community involvement and further promote conservation values.

STEM at Roedean

At Roedean, we lay the foundations for future female STEM stars! Elsewhere, in other schools and broader society, there are unseen barriers for entry into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths-based careers. Once at Roedean, your daughter will be free from stigma, and, if she chooses, supported to launch herself into tomorrow’s world, with some of the best possible qualifications.

Sciences and Maths are among the most popular A Level choices here, which bucks the national trend. Our students are not burdened by stereotypes relating to what they are capable of as young women, which makes them more than a match for their male peers. On leaving Roedean, a large proportion of our alumnae go on to read STEM degrees at top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. We also have links with many Old Roedeanians who are paving-the-way by working as high-flyers in the field.

We sow the seeds for a love of STEM at an early stage: prospective pupils are given the opportunity to take part in exciting Maths and Science challenges, and, having joined the School, the Key Stage 3 curriculum hinges around discovery, excitement, and enjoyment. Sciences are taught separately, by subject specialists, however, pupils in Year 7 have just one Science teacher, to aid transition.

Moving further up the school, Maths and Science curricula offer challenge and support, as appropriate. Teachers are skilful, approachable, and generous with their time. Initiatives like Maths Café provide help where it is needed. Students can also expect to be stretched by extension work, in order that they can realise their full potential. In the Sixth Form, our provision for preparing future medics is extensive and hard to beat; our aspiring vets, medics, and dentists are highly successful in their applications. Our programme for Oxbridge applicants is similarly comprehensive and successful.

STEM is, of course, not limited to the classroom: there are a huge number of opportunities for co-curricular engagement here at Roedean. From award-winning bioscience research projects and summer placements with the University of Brighton, celebrations of Pi Day, trips (recent ones to NASA and Iceland), successes in international competitions, and animal science work on our very own Farm.

Recently our students have built and raced their own electric car at Goodwood (F24 competition), won a TeenTech award for Best Innovation or Prototype at the Institute of Engineering Technology, and trained their hi-tech telescopes on the night sky as part of our own Astronomy Club. They have studied the genetics and development of their own chicks, published work in peer-reviewed international journals, and collaborated with medics and researchers from the wider school community and beyond. Just as STEM keeps developing, so does our offering.

We are delighted that Dr Suzie Imber, Professor of Space Sciences at the University of Leicester, is Roedean’s STEM Ambassador - she regularly comes to the School and speaks to the girls, inspiring them with her expeditions up mountains, and the fact that she is heavily involved in the current mission to Mars!

Sports Curriculum

The Sports Department’s aim is to provide all students with the opportunities to enjoy, compete, and excel in a range of physical activities. This experience builds character, develops leadership skills, imparts core values, and develops an understanding of a healthy active lifestyle. We aim to motivate students to engage with physical activity throughout their lives, to instil in them the confidence to participate in physical activity, and to give them the knowledge and understanding that taking part in physical activity is important for their mental, social, and physical health.

In Key Stage 3, the girls have one single and one double lesson a week, and they are offered a programme of basic skills through Hockey, Fitness, Gym, outdoor games, Netball, indoor games, racquet sports, aqua Sports, Swimming, Athletics, Striking and Fielding, Cricket, Tennis, and Physical Literacy.

In Key Stage 4 and 5, a wider range of activities is available, encouraging participation outside of curriculum lessons and the School. For example, in addition to the usual team sports and activities, Sixth Form girls have the opportunity to take part in Zumba and Yoga, and they can exercise in the Gym. Girls also have the opportunity to do the Sports Leaders Award.

Sports Facilities at Roedean

Roedean is becoming increasingly competitive in a wide range of sports and is incredibly pleased to now be able to offer a flood-lit all-weather pitch, 5-a-side football pitch, and newly-resurfaced and flood-lit courts, which opened in 2018 to complement our Sports Hall & Gym, 25-metre pool, and cricket pitches. This transformational investment has already improved the standard of sport at Roedean through greater training and playing time, and the girls' confidence in matches is growing. It means that fixtures are rarely cancelled due to the weather, and we are able to host a greater number of matches. Having flood-lit pitches and courts allows the girls to train and play in the evenings all year round.

The all-weather pitch can be used not only for Hockey, but also for hosting a full range of sports including Lacrosse, Cricket, Athletics, PE, fitness sessions, and after-school clubs. Combined with the new half-size 5-a-side football pitch, the resurfacing and floodlighting of existing courts, and general site improvements, this is a transformational investment in sport. Great care and consideration has been taken to address the local landscape, deliver high-quality yet cost-effective facilities, and respect the environment through energy efficiency.

We are now able to field three or more teams in our major sports at the younger age-groups, showing our strength in depth, becoming feared adversaries in the area. The girls are relishing the buzz that comes from being successful and working well as a team, and this positive atmosphere is spreading.

Swimming Pool

We have an on-site swimming pool at Roedean. Girls in Years 7, 8, and 9 have swimming lessons in the curriculum, and we teach life saving as part of the Heads, Hands, Hearts Programme (HHH), and Year 10 and above can choose to swim in their games lessons. We have six hours of co-curricular swimming a week, and anyone of any ability is welcome. We also have a House swimming competition in the Spring Term.

Roedean is lucky enough to be situated right on the cliff top by the sea, and we love to take advantage of the fantastic location; therefore, we run a sea swimming club from September to October and from April to June. We have three groups, beginners, intermediates, and advanced, so all abilities are welcome. The advanced group is training for the Channel crossing swim. Last year the crossing was cancelled, so the girls swam the distance of the Channel along the Brighton coast to raise money for charity, and to make sure that all of their training had not gone to waste.

Last year, we had an outstanding set of results in swimming, winning 5 out 5 home galas in the junior, intermediate, and senior category, and 100% of our away galas. We took two junior and two intermediate teams, with 16 swimmers altogether, to the English Schools Swimming Association Sussex County relay competition. Two of our teams made it through to the Finals for a freestyle and medley relay, coming 28th and 14th overall. We entered the Bath Cup Swimming relay and the Benenden Swimming Festival for the first time this year.

Swimming is extremely strong at Roedean and we have 30+ elite swimmers at School.

The Art Studio

The Art Studio was purpose-built as part of the New Wing in 1911. Designed by Sir John Simpson, the room has a beautiful fireplace, with a stove of Danish origins, its three sections symbolising Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell.

The glazed tiles were designed by girls in the 1930s under the direction of the Head of Art, Miss D B Martin. The tiles are themed, to include the seven deadly sins, mythical beasts, the signs of the zodiac, and botanical images.

The intaglio tiles show scenes of everyday school life, including playing cricket, the carpentry shed, swimming pool, and the Studio itself, with its original dais, which is still in situ today.

The Blyth

The Blyth Room is named after Lt.-Colonel Charles Frederick Tolmé Blyth, C.M.G., LL.D., B.SC., T.D. Known as Fred, he married Agatha Lawrence in 1896, who was sister to the founders of the School. He was Clerk to Roedean Council from 1919-1932, and again from 1939-1946, while his son, and successor in office, Mr E K Blyth was serving in World War II.

From 1932-1947 he was a member of the Council and became Vice-President from 1947 until his death in 1950.

The Blyth Room was established by the Governors and ORs in gratitude for his services to Roedean, and has been used as a Library for the younger girls and now as a classroom.

This room, along with a section of the Main School corridor and office room, originally formed part of the gymnasium, near Houses 1 & 2, and the engineered trusses are still visible.

The Chapel

Built in 1906, the Chapel was designed by Sir John Simpson, a blend of Byzantine and English Classical styles. Inside, the walls are covered with Venetian marble, which was donated by former pupils over a number of years, finally completed in the 1950s.

The stained glass windows were also donations, many commemorating the lives of soldiers lost in World War I. Twelve were designed by Clayton and Bell, and the large East Window by Geoffrey Fuller Webb. There are two windows by Morris & Co, dating from 1917 (Valour: Fortitude) and 1920 (Sacrifice: Victory).

The Chapel also houses the White Ensign, which is generally only flown on Royal Navy ships or shore establishments. This signifies the School’s naval connection during World War WII, when Roedean was taken over by the Army and then the Navy, and became known as HMS Vernon. HMS Vernon was a training school for torpedoes and mining, and for the electrical branches of the Royal Navy, and they were stationed here from 1941 until June 1945. Roedean staff and pupils were evacuated to Keswick in the Lake District during this time, with a smaller group going to Edgehill School in Canada.

There are also ensigns in the Ante Chapel, which were originally presented by Roedean Boarding Houses 1-4 to dreadnought battleships in 1914, when pupils were invited to tour the ships. The flags were allegedly flown at the Battle of Jutland and later returned to the School in 1919, when the ships were put out of commission.

Today, the Chapel is the spiritual heart of the school, surrounded by a sense of calm, and it serves as a place of quiet reflection for many girls and members of staff, whatever their religious beliefs.

Dorothy Lawrence was passionate about music, and from the outset it played a central role in the Chapel. The same is the case today, and we are fortunate to have a wonderful choir which enhances our weekly Chapel services. In addition, concerts are regularly performed in the Chapel, taking full advantage of its outstanding acoustic; there are regular lunchtime recitals given by students, the Music Department’s major events often take place here.

The Curriculum

As an academic school, we seek to inspire curiosity and a love of learning in all our girls. The learning environment at Roedean provides a wide range of fields and opportunities in which the girls can explore and realise their potential. The strength of teaching at Roedean is that discussion and debate sit at the heart of learning. Lessons are thought-provoking and meaningful; the Sciences are as popular as the Humanities, and in all lessons girls thrive through collaboration, cooperation, challenge, and discussion with each other. Our girls are keen to think, to learn, to explore, and to develop intellectually, socially, and emotionally. The success of this approach is borne out by the fact that the girls achieve very highly, and go on to pursue their education at top institutions in the UK and beyond.

The Key Stage 3 curriculum is designed to engage our younger students and to engender in them a love of learning. Students take lessons in the full complement of 20 different subjects, so that they can begin to find new strengths and develop existing interests. The addition of the Head, Heart & Hand programme (HHH) has proved hugely successful and popular with students. The concept is designed to challenge the girls to think beyond what they might ordinarily do and to try out things they might not have come across before. With options ranging from Cooking to Weaving, and Self-Defence to Beginners’ Philosophy and Politics, this curriculum development has made a powerful impact on the quality of our Key Stage 3 offer, bringing mid-week sessions to life with practical, positive, and challenging activities for everyone in Key Stage 3. This breadth is maintained until the end of Year 9, and informs the GCSE subject choices they make at this point.

As girls move through Year 9, they are supported by the academic and pastoral teams with the process of choosing their GCSE options, and the Year 9 tutor and Head of Year are pivotal in this process, providing support and guidance. Time is devoted to this in tutorials, one-to-one meetings, and PSHE lessons, so as to be sure that everyone receives the guidance they need. The process of selection at Roedean is taken very seriously, and the girls are provided with extensive support and guidance to help them shape an individually designed programme of study and co-curricular activity. Twenty-three subjects are available at GCSE and, to ensure that our GCSE programme provides students with a broad, balanced education, consistent with the aims of the School, our curriculum extends beyond the core requirements, offering many possible subject permutations. Roedean students achieve excellent results, even in 2020 in the most difficult circumstances, underlining the school’s academic prowess.

The Sixth Form at Roedean promises a journey of intellectual stimulation and challenge, combined with a wealth of opportunities and experiences, in a happy, purposeful and supportive environment. These final years of formal education provide the students with a solid and powerful springboard to the next stage of their education, and onwards into 21st century society. For the first time in their educational career, they are able to study just the subjects they love. They have more space to develop their own ideas and a sense of personal involvement in their work.

The Dining Halls

At Roedean, students never go hungry. With a large team of dedicated catering staff in both the Main School and the Sixth Form Centre, at each meal we are able to offer a wide variety of well-balanced hot and cold food; we are able to cater to all dietary requirements, and the School is nut-free. Whether a day girl or boarder, a break-time snack, lunch, and teatime in the boarding houses are included within our fees, with breakfast and dinner also included for those who choose to board.

The breakfast menu changes daily, and ranges from waffles and pancakes to the ever-popular eggs benedict, as well as cereal, toast, fruit, and yoghurt.

To keep energy up until lunch, at morning break, students can help themselves to biscuits, fruit, and juice, as well as having access to a water fountain during breaks and lesson change-over to top up their bottles, and Horizons café, should time allow.

Lunch is one of the culinary highlights of the day, with hot meat and vegetarian options available, along with salads, sandwiches, baguettes, and soup. International cuisine is also available at the Fusion Bar, a favourite with many students, with food ranging from BBQ ribs to Thai curry to Chow Mein, and much more.

With a dedicated pastry chef, Roedean serves delectable homemade hot puddings for dessert, such as brownie or lemon meringue pie, with the occasional cold dessert, such as profiteroles or cheesecake. Fruit, jelly, and yoghurt are also available.

The catering team also goes out of its way to mark special occasions or festivals, with themed menus and decorations, such as pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, fortune cookies during Chinese New Year, and a spooky Halloween feast.

After School, students can make their way to their House ODR, where squash and fruit are served, along with a different daily treat, ranging from doughnuts, to croissants, to toast. Fruit and other snacks are always available to students in the House Studies.
At weekends, boarders are treated to breakfast in their Houses, cooked for them by the House staff. This varies from week to week, with options such as omelettes, poached eggs, and pancakes. In the Sixth Form, breakfast alternates each Saturday between made-to-order American pancakes and toasties. Saturday dinner is often served take-out style from the Sixth Form Centre. Brunch on Sundays starts a little later is is more relaxed, with a variety of hot and cold options.

The Houses also often run special evening food-based activities, such as pancake, toastie, and cupcake making, all of which are at no extra cost. Students often volunteer to give lessons in how to cook dishes from their own country to the other students, and the House staff help to source the ingredients for these.

It comes as no surprise that, when asked to name their favourite thing about Roedean, girls almost always include the food on their list!

The Founding Sisters

Roedean School was founded in 1885 by Misses Penelope, Dorothy, and Millicent Lawrence. They were collectively known as ‘The Firm’, and acted as joint Heads for 39 years, until their retirement in 1924.

The Lawrences were part of a large family of 14 siblings, who were supportive of their new venture. The Right Hon. Sir Paul Ogden Lawrence gave his sisters £50 to help them found the School, and he and his wife were frequent visitors. He later became President of Roedean from 1944 until his death in 1952.

This room was originally the School Hall, and was converted into the Main School Library in 1993. It houses a collection of paintings of the founders, along with their brother.

The portrait of Penelope Lawrence in the centre was painted by Sir William Orpen, a famous society artist, and was unveiled at the School on 28 Jan 1928 by Mrs Martineau.

The portraits of Dorothy and Millicent Lawrence were painted by Hugh Goldwin Rivière in 1928 and 1929, respectively.

These portraits of the founders of Roedean began the tradition that sees every leaving Head recorded, either by a painting or photograph.

Around the walls of the Library can be seen Honours Boards with the names of Prefects, Senior Prefects, and Head Girls of the School, dating from 1885 to the present day.

A sister school in South Africa was co-founded by Theresa Lawrence and Katherine Margaret Earle in 1903.

The Houses at Roedean

The four Roedean boarding houses, Houses 1, 2, 3, and 4, formed part of the original building. Completed in 1898 and designed by Sir John Simpson, they were purpose-built and named after the original site the School occupied, 1-4 Lewes Crescent.

The School was founded as a boarding school, and every student was therefore assigned to one of the four Houses. This tradition continued, however, following the first admission of day students into the School, and, to this day, the school community is divided into the four House teams. Each girl is part of a House, and each House is part of the School.

House spirit is strong at Roedean – students work that out pretty quickly when they arrive! The friendly rivalry produces a sense of camaraderie and community which inspires them to learn, grow, and achieve together. Each House has its own colour, green, yellow, blue, or red, which is at the heart of its identity, and this is never clearer than in the numerous inter-House competitions, with coloured pom-poms and face-paints, and House chants.

Whether a day girl or a weekly, flexi-, or full boarder, students are fully integrated into their boarding house, which combines the heritage of the original elements with contemporary features, so that modern showers can be found next to original light fittings in the bathrooms, tea-pot lamp shades shine down on original wooden flooring, and modern furniture sits beside an original fireplace in the Drawing Room. The facilities are amazing, and the £9m refurbishment of Houses 1-4 has been described as “the swankiest … in the world” in Tatler.

This particular frieze dates from c1898-1905 and was designed by Sylvia Lawrence, younger sister to the founders of the school. She was a gifted artist and was Head of Art at Roedean for 12 years. Sylvia was a protégée of Victorian painter, G F Watts, and she is credited with inventing the unique school uniform, known as a djibbah.

The Library

The Library is at the heart of the School and provides students with quiet study spaces, PCs, printing and Wi-Fi access. Students have access to the regularly updated fiction books, as well as a large non-fiction collection to support their studies. Students also have a say in what books the Library stocks. There are also DVDs, Journals, and a wide range of online resources. The qualified Librarians are on hand to offer research support and book recommendations.

There are lots of weekly activities for students to participate in, including Book Club, Roedean Roving Reporters, Reading Reps, and contributing to the weekly Literary Section in the Head’s Review.

The Library also supports the Roedean Readers’ Award, a reading challenge on offer to all students. The challenge encourages students to read a variety of different texts and genres, and they can complete a Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award.

Literary events are held throughout the year, and recent celebrations have included an Alice in Wonderland tea party, a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed feast, World Book Day character fashion shows, and author talks and book signings.

Roedean also participates in the annual Southern School Book Awards. Students can read and vote for their favourite shortlisted book, and then have the option to attend the awards ceremony where they can meet all of the authors.

The Old Reference Library

The Old Reference Library, or ‘Old Ref’, was the original School Library. It was purpose-built as part of the New Wing in 1911, to house more than 2,000 books. Prior to this, books had been housed on the gallery of the School Hall (now the Main School Library). The school Librarian of the time relates how the books were transported along the Main School corridor by a chain of girls, every book being passed from hand to hand until it reached the Old Ref shelves.

Today the Old Ref houses an overflow of books from the Main Library, including books that are not relevant to the current school curriculum, but may be useful for further reading. The space is used as a study space for the Sixth Form and a presentation space.

Trips and Weekends Programme

In the first three years of School, there are annual residential trips that are designed to make new friends and discover new challenges. Day trips, which are largely department–based or run by societies or sports clubs, are also run throughout the academic year.

There is also a full programme of weekend activities and trips available to boarders and day girls alike. Every weekend throughout the school year, events are put on to provide something different from the working week.

The Weekend Programme is full and varied, and it caters to the interests of the girls. Activities are run in the Houses, such as sushi making, craft activities, treasure hunts, but trips are also regularly arranged – in the past, these have included outdoor adventurous activities, such as horse-riding and windsurfing, trips to Hampton Court, Harry Potter World, Buckingham Palace, and Thorpe Park, as well as the popular Christmas shopping trips to Brighton and Harrods. Educational visits are also run at weekends to museums, art galleries, and theatres.

Where we are

Roedean sits on a beautiful 45 acre campus, with a further 75 acres of land adjacent to the site. The school is very accessible, close enough to Brighton to take advantage of all it has to offer in terms of culture and a dynamic atmosphere, but far enough away to enjoy the beauty of our unique cliff top location, which brings together our proximity to the sea with a sense of space afforded by being on the edge of the South Downs National Park.

Having our own tunnel down to the sea near the marina, and being just a few minutes from the beaches and bustle of Brighton town and its pier, our girls can walk down to the undercliffs, explore the rockpools, go shopping in Brighton, undertake charity work in the local community, learn to sail along the coast, go to the cinema in the marina at the weekend, or simply enjoy our beautiful grounds.

The school offers a truly inspirational setting for girls to inhabit as they grow up, whether it’s enjoying the tranquility of the sparkling sea on a summer’s day, or marveling at its wild beauty during a winter storm.

The unique experience of growing up in this idyllic coastal landscape will create lifelong memories for the girls.

Roedean prides itself on having outstanding pastoral care. The small size of each boarding house means that students will very quickly develop a strong rapport with the other girls in their house, as well as with the house staff. Touching base at regular intervals every day means that the staff can quickly identify a girl who may be home-sick or struggling with a piece of work, and they can resolve any problems at an early stage.

In addition to the staff who are available to girls, some find it easier to talk to people who are nearer their own age, and our team of Peer Listeners, made up of girls in the senior year-groups, is available every day of the week to listen and chat to any girls, either individually or in a small group. These girls have been trained by the School Counsellor, and are very friendly, and ready with valuable advice for a variety of situations.

Higher Education and Future Guidance

At Roedean, we appreciate that the girls’ education at School is a stepping stone to the rest of their lives. An outstanding Sixth Form experience is much more than getting top grades. Through everything they do here, students will develop a real sense of who they might be in the future. Roedean girls leave to study a wide range of subjects in higher education at the best institutions. Expert advice at School to help students make the correct choices is complemented by mentoring from Roedean alumnae in their chosen field. The Roedean Sixth Form is the transition to the next stage of their life, and they will make their mark in the world – we’re sure of it!

In the Sixth Form, Careers and university guidance begin early, so that the girls are able to make informed choices concerning their future direction long before they need to do so. The girls have periodic careers and university guidance as part of the Life Skills Programme, as well as discussions with their tutors and one-to-one meetings with the Assistant Head: Academic.

They are given support to find valuable work experience and learn about GAP years. At the end of Year 12, all girls take part in the UCAS Day, to which admissions’ tutors are invited to address the girls, and they learn how to write an impressive and engaging Personal Statement, as well as filling in the majority of the on-line application form.

In Year 13, they are supported closely through the application process for UCAS and Art Foundation courses, as well as those to foreign universities. We encourage all the students to complete it as early as possible, in order to ensure that it does not distract from their academic work.

Students’ progress through Roedean, the UCAS process and on into university will be carefully supported by the Assistant Head: Academic, and Dr Hannan, Director of Sixth Form. Students at all levels are able to make an appointment to ensure that they are maintaining the necessary breadth to gain access to courses later in their education.

Secret Tunnel to the Sea

Roedean’s ‘secret tunnel to the sea’ was built in 1910, with 144 steps leading down from the Old School Gates to a sheltered platform below. It provided direct access to the beach and boat house which was excavated from the bottom of the cliff. Sea swimming took place on calm days, but the construction of the Undercliff Walk in the 1930s made this more difficult. During World War II, before the School was evacuated, the tunnel was used as one of the School’s air raid shelters. Today the tunnel opens for tours on Roedean Day and other events, including the much-anticipated annual Admissions event, Rockpools Day, in June.

Health Centre

Roedean is afforded its own on-site Health Centre which is open from 7.30am-7.30pm Monday to Friday, and weekends from 8am-2pm.

Roedean can provide medical treatment and first aid needs as required for all students, with a Lead Nurse and Deputy Nurse, who are supported by a team of fully-qualified part-time nurses.

The Medical Centre is well-equipped and comfortably-furnished, with a sea view. There are seven beds if the students need to rest and recover with the support and care of a qualified nurse.

A local GP acts as the School’s Medical Officer and attends the School on a Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon.

All day pupils remain registered with their own local Doctor, but may use the Health Centre at certain times of the day, if required for medical needs. All boarders are registered with the Doctor on arrival to the School, and have an initial health check with the School Nurse to discuss any medical needs they have.

If a student is unwell and needs to see the Doctor on a day where the GP is not in attendance, arrangements are made for them to travel by taxi to see the doctor, accompanied by a member of the boarding staff.

When the Medical Centre is not open, we have a qualified first aider to attend to unwell students in the boarding houses, but we encourage guardians and parents to collect their daughters if overnight care is required.

We also have Counsellors in School Monday-Friday for appointment clinics, which are arranged via our Pastoral Managers.
