Where we are

Located in the beautiful University town of St Andrews, St Leonards provides an outstanding boarding and day education for boys and girls aged 5 -18. Full, flexi and weekly boarding is available from age 10.

The International Baccalaureate is at the heart of what St Leonards has to offer. We are proud to be the first IB continuum school in Scotland, and indeed the only school in the UK to actively offer all four inspiring IB programmes, from the PYP, through the MYP, to the IB Career-related Programme and Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form.

Boarding in St Rule

St Rule is our junior boarding house and is home to boys and girls from Year 6 up to Year 11. Family is at the heart of life in the house and boarders live closely together, socialising in the recently refurbished communal areas and coming together for quizzes, games nights and house activities.

Each weekend there are trips and games planned, from volleyball on Birdcage and toasted marshmallows round the firepit, to watersports activities and cultural days out in Edinburgh and beyond. It really is a home from home for those who live and learn there.

St Leonards Tour Instructions

Welcome to our 360 Tour of St Leonards! We hope that you enjoy discovering all that our school has to offer. Use your mouse to drag the image, hover on the hotspots revealing the room, click to enter, zoom in and out and open the red content hotspots along the way to learn more about St Leonards through videos, photo galleries and more. Explore our historic coastal town of St Andrews from the sky by selecting the Up Town icon - this will show you some of our favourite spots to visit. Click Up Town again to return to the school or explore the town from the ground by finding and clicking the ice cream icon. We would recommend starting your tour in the Quad or Birdcage and remember that all of our rooms can be accessed via the room list tab at the bottom of the home page.

If you have any questions, would like to arrange a visit to St Leonards in person or are ready to start your St Leonards journey, please contact our admissions team at registrar@stleonards-fife.org. Enjoy!

Birdcage & Big Field

St Leonards is known as the ‘cradle of lacrosse’, and is proud of its sporting heritage. The School is the first place in the world where girls’ lacrosse was played, after St Leonards’ first Headmistresses, Dame Louisa Lumsden and Dame Frances Dove, were inspired by a men’s match in Canada in 1884. Today, lacrosse remains one of our core sports.

A ‘sport for all’ approach ensures pupils are offered every opportunity both to compete and to participate in team and individual sports. Young people are encouraged to lead a healthy, active lifestyle from age five to the end of their school years and beyond, through Games sessions and PE lessons, after-school activities and competitive fixtures.

The Autumn Term at St Leonards focuses on rugby and hockey, followed by lacrosse and boys’ hockey in the Spring Term, and tennis and athletics in the Summer Term. In addition, pupils can develop skills in everything from parkour to pickleball, basketball, football, horse riding, fitness and more.

St Leonards is recognised for its leading six-tier Golf Programme, which caters from players from beginner level to elite, with the top golfers securing prestigious golf scholarships at top US universities.

Bishopshall Bedroom

Our Bishopshall boarders live in either single or twin study bedrooms, all recently refurbished, and many with views across the school playing fields to the rolling countryside beyond.

The curtains and cushions throughout the house carry a bespoke Bishopshall print, designed by one of our boarders as part of the £3 million redevelopment - there’s a different colour for each corridor!

The building itself dates from the late 1860s, first serving as student halls of residence for the University of St Andrews before being acquired as a private residence by the Bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane (co-founder of the Cambridge and Oxford annual boat race), hence the name, Bishopshall. It has existed as a boarding house at St Leonards since 1887.

Bishopshall is home to over 60 Senior girls at St Leonards, and reopened in 2017 following a complete redevelopment. It has a traditional yet stylish ‘country house’ feel to the interiors, thanks to retained period features and Axminster carpets.

This is complemented by a stylish kitchen and common room, games room, cosy snugs and group study spaces, and this, the Drawing Room. Pizza and movie nights are held here, while house bake-offs, sushi-making and craft activities take place in the kitchen.

The Bishopshall boarding team are on hand to support the girls, with wellbeing taking centre stage in the life of the house. This ensures the boarders are happy with their balance of studies, sports, activities and time to relax with friends.

Junior Classroom

At St Leonards, we aim to instil a lifelong love of learning in our pupils through our inspiring all-through International Baccalaureate curriculum. The first chapter of the learning journey is the Primary Years Programme (PYP) which gives children a firm grounding in numeracy, literacy, physical, social and personal education, the arts and social studies. The inquiry-based curriculum is structured around six transdisciplinary themes, which are directed by the pupils’ interests and questions and global in outlook. Teaching and learning focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer: the development of digital literacy, emotional intelligence and communication skills goes hand-in-hand with the acquisition of subject-specific knowledge.

The children love to take their inquiries into the great outdoors: class reading books are taken down to the pier on bright days, to the fire pit in twilight hours, and into one of the school’s two cosy yurts, complete with wood-burning stoves, in wet weather.

Learning in the Junior years is complemented by a diverse programme of activities which open doors to bushcraft, gardening, music, drama, dance, languages, film, arts and crafts, and a whole host of team and individual sports including hockey, rugby, football, lacrosse, swimming, running, and golf. Together, the curriculum and co-curriculum ensure that our youngest pupils are able to grow and flourish as individuals and learners.

Queen Mary’s Library

Queen Mary’s Library is the oldest part of the School, and takes its name from Mary Queen of Scots, who is believed to have stayed there during visits to St Andrews in the 1560s. In addition to the bookshelves, resources and study areas one would expect to find in a library, this one also houses ‘Queen Mary’s Bedroom’, complete with original features preserved, and offering a fascinating insight into the life of one of Scotland’s most famous monarchs.

For St Leonards’ pupils, QML, as it is affectionately known, is a hub of academic activity. A dedicated library website gives students access to endless resources - journals, books on the shelves, example essays, project inspiration, and worlds of fiction to explore.

Downstairs in the Vaults, you’ll find comfortable sofas and plenty of characterful nooks and crannies for quiet study and reading. Upstairs in the Language Room and History Room, there are books galore on the full-height wooden shelves.

The QML garden and steps are used for outdoor lessons, exam revision, and for Theory of Knowledge exhibitions in the Sixth Form.

Senior Classroom

St Leonards has been at the forefront of education since its foundation in 1877, and today is proud to be an all-through International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. The School has always offered a wide and forward-looking curriculum, and taken a pioneering approach to teaching and learning. This wholehearted commitment to a broad and inspiring curriculum prepares pupils in line with the School’s motto ‘Ad Vitam’, for life.

Academically ambitious, a St Leonards education concentrates on the whole person, giving pupils from age five up to 18 endless opportunities to grow and develop as a learner and as an individual. The values of the IB Learner Profile underpin all that we do.

Pupils at St Leonards are encouraged to be: principled, open-minded, caring, reflective, balanced, thinkers, inquirers, knowledgeable, communicators.

In Years 7-13 - known as the Senior Years - pupils follow the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), followed by GCSE examinations, or IGCSEs, with a dedicated one-year Pre-IB course offered in addition to Year 11. Two Sixth Form pathways keep options open for Year 12 and 13 students, who choose between either the IB Diploma or the IB Career-related Programme.

Both offer broad, challenging and exciting options for the final two years of school, and year after year, St Leonards pupils secure places at leading UK and international universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Aberdeen, Sydney and the Sorbonne.

St Leonards Grass

Situated in the heart of St Andrews - the home of golf and of Scotland’s oldest university - St Leonards takes its place on the iconic skyline of the town. Completed in 1901, the School’s clock tower chimes on the hour and stands proud amidst the rich history that surrounds it, and the School.

Inside our mediaeval walls and beneath the clock tower is St Leonards Grass, home to our Drama Yurt, three colonies of honey bees tended to by the Beekeeping Club, and a scattering of picnic benches, perfect for outdoor study in the sunshine.

Over the course of an academic year, it plays host to events and celebrations, from presentations to prizegivings, cricket matches, coffee mornings, dance performances, and rehearsals for school productions, both in the yurt and outdoors.

Pupils critically engage with the style, function and reception of sculptures, architecture and paintings in their Visual Arts courses, tuning into the Learner Profile attributes of being open-minded, balanced, knowledgeable and reflective thinkers and communicators. They are also encouraged to channel their innovative, imaginative and individual visions and feelings, to experiment and to take risks in their artistic endeavours, resulting in vibrant and varied portfolios. These are showcased at the annual Art Exhibition, a highlight of the Summer Term calendar at which pupils, parents, staff, former pupils and members of the local community convene for summer drinks and live music whilst perusing the galleries.

The East Sands

St Leonards is situated in the heart of the seaside town of St Andrews, just a two-minute walk from the East Sands.

Junior pupils take their learning to the beach on a weekly basis. Lessons are vibrant and varied: pupils learn to tell the time using shells and seaweed; channel their creative energies by creating sand sculptures; enjoy story time in the fresh air; and investigate forces using ropes, barrels and other found objects. The children also head down to the beach for picnics, sandcastle competitions and half-termly ‘dooks’ in the North Sea – those who complete three dooks become fully fledged members of the Polar Bear Club.

Further up the school, pupils undertake fieldwork in the coastal environment, take part in watersports workshops, and also play hockey and rugby on the sands and make the most of the beautiful running routes along the coast as part of our extensive sports programme.

The Music School Auditorium

The Music School at St Leonards was opened in 1987 by H.R.H. Princess Alexandra, and houses a suite of individual practice rooms, music classrooms, and the Auditorium. There is a musical group for every day of the week, and a concert for every week of the year, whether it’s the Guitar Ensemble, an a capella group, the St Leonards Ukulele Group - affectionately known as the SLUGS - or a full choir or orchestra.

Over 230 pupils take individual instrumental and vocal lessons each week, ensuring the Music Department remains a hive of activity all year. Firm favourites of the musical calendar include the Christmas Mix in December, traditional festivals of lessons and carols in Holy Trinity Church, and the Leavers’ Concert.

For our younger performers, regular informal concerts are held in the Auditorium, giving pupils the opportunity to play and sing on stage in a more relaxed setting, building their confidence ready for years of performances to come.

Junior pupils are encouraged to pick up an instrument from Year 2, thanks to the School’s ‘Give it a Go’ violin and clarineo initiatives, and the Music for All programme improves accessibility to instrumental tuition for members of the wider community.

The School Hall

The School Hall sits right at the heart of the School, just off the Quad, and is a space for the St Leonards community to come together - often for the purpose of celebration - for assemblies, inter-island competitions, school plays, prizegiving and more.

Successes are celebrated in this room, speeches given, and memories shared, but probably the highlight of a St Leonards pupil’s journey is Prizegiving, held in the Summer Term in the University of St Andrews’ Younger Hall, giving our young people the opportunity to share the same stage as graduates from the UK’s top university.

Atop the School Hall stage is an original Father Willis organ, created and installed by one of Britain’s finest organ builders. Down in the main body of the hall, the floorboards are trodden - often in ‘traverse’ - by the St Leonards Players, a group of talented young actors, who take an original script from page to stage each year, including at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

St Leonards pupils also have use of the professional Byre Theatre, located just across the road from the school grounds, and stage two public performances each year, with recent productions including Little Shop of Horrors and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

The School has its own 25-metre indoor pool, which is used for everything from lane swimming sessions to forays into water polo as part of the PE curriculum in the Middle Years Programme.

Aquathlon is amongst the co-curricular activities, and the School works with local primaries to ensure swimming is readily available to all in the wider community.

The Wellbeing Hub

Welcome to our Wellbeing Hub, a bright and airy space where pupils of all ages can drop in for advice, support or simply time out.
Wellbeing pervades all that we do at St Leonards: it shapes our policies, pastoral care, teaching and learning, and programme of co-curricular activities. We believe that there is ‘no one size fits all’ approach, instead tailoring our provision to the unique needs of each child and encouraging them to reflect on how they are feeling and to communicate this to staff and their families at home. Each pupil is known by name.

For those who need to take some time out from the humdrum of school life, the Wellbeing Hub is a bright and airy room where pupils can go to find a little bit more energy, determination, common sense, acceptance, kindness, concentration, joy and resilience. Pupils can ground themselves with the help of mindful colouring, fidget toys, jigsaws and Lego, or simply enjoy a cup of tea and a chat with our Wellbeing Assistant.

For those who enjoy spending time in nature, our multisensory Wellbeing Trail is the perfect place to go for a few minutes of calm amidst the busyness of the school day. The trail has trees, herbs, and flowering plants, as well as bug hotels and bird boxes, which together create a peaceful environment conducive to reducing stress and anxiety and increasing feelings of relaxation.

Welcome to Ollerenshaw

With boarders coming from across the UK and all round the world to live and learn at St Leonards, our boarding house kitchens are where pupils cook and share family recipes with their friends, and tuck into weekend brunches, pizzas from the wood-fired outdoor oven and homemade smoothies.

The Science Department

The Science laboratories are a hive of activities and experiments, with pupils leading their inquiries in directions of their choosing thanks to the broad International Baccalaureate curriculum. Pupils at St Leonards are encouraged to be ‘inquirers’ - one of the attributes of the IB Learner Profile - and on any given day they can be found designing devices to record a piece of music, investigating the effect of household cleaning products on plant growth, or using Universal indicator to create a rainbow!

The Swimming Pool

From Year 1, swimming is a staple of the weekly timetable, supporting St Leonards pupils to develop this important skill and, for those who wish, taking it to a competitive level with galas and competitions.

Ollerenshaw is home to around 50 of our Senior boarders, who live together in a family environment. The house is named after St Leonards alumna and prominent mathematician, Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw, and has been refurbished to the highest standard.

They say the kitchen is at the heart of any home, and that is certainly the case in Ollerenshaw. Boarders gather here at various points throughout the day to make hot drinks, enjoy a snack and a chat, and to play games such as darts and Ping Pong.

With boarders coming from across the UK and all round the world to live and learn at St Leonards, our boarding house kitchens are where pupils cook and share family recipes with their friends, and tuck into weekend brunches, pizzas from the wood-fired outdoor oven and homemade smoothies.
