ABOUT US

Windermere School nestles on a hillside within 45 acres of National Park landscape and enjoys one of the most picturesque views in the Lake District.

Our three woodland campuses, including our private Watersports Centre, contain all of our academic, boarding and sporting facilities.

This stunning location has been the inspiration for world-famous artists, poets, and authors, a sanctuary and the antidote to congested city life, a fascination to scientists, a home for adventurers as well as part of the masterpiece of human creative genius that affords us World Heritage status. It is a daily inspiration to every one of us fortunate enough to call it our school.

Each route has a dedicated driver, which helps to foster a personal relationship with families and builds a feeling of security and trust with the students. Parents are given the drivers’ contact details to easily relay last minute changes via hands free mobile phones to make communication quick, simple and effective.

Pick up points and routes can be changed, within reason, to meet the needs of families and to ensure the safety of the students.

As a school, we strive to do more than equip our children academically for the future. Developing resilience has perhaps never been as important as it is now and our forward-thinking pastoral programme has this aim at its heart.

We focus on teaching children how to proactively manage their mental health, how to appreciate and celebrate the community’s diversity, particularly neurodiversity and how to show compassion and kindness within the Windermere School community and beyond. The work of our form tutors, allowing children to experience mindfulness practice or reflecting with them on good sleep hygiene is supported by the work of our Wellbeing Centre.

A strong sense of self-esteem can help pupils reach their full potential and our staff embrace their duty to provide support to each and every individual. We believe good relationships are the key to success whether it is on the sports field, academically, creatively, or in outdoor pursuits.

Carl Sagan’s famous quote “Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge” could not be truer than at Windermere School. Inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals is a key goal for the experienced teaching staff in the Science Department, who hope that pupils find a career that springs out of a natural love of science, that has been enhanced and encouraged at school.
The over-arching philosophy is one of helping students to think about science in a real-world context, to problem-solve, to question and to find evidence. Lots of practical work, hands on time and use of our outdoor classroom space, promotes the self-reliance and confidence to look for solutions: important characteristics for success in the world of work.”

Pupils throughout the school are encouraged to be ‘inquirers’ – one of the attributes of the IB Learner Profile – and on any given day they can be found investigating the effect of household cleaning products on plant growth, or using a universal indicator to make a rainbow!

From our humble beginnings as St Anne’s High in 1863 to our modern-day representation as Windermere School, our history is extensive and exemplary.

Windermere School began as St Anne’s School, located in Lytham, St Anne’s, in 1863. The school moved to its current location in Windermere in 1924, when it became St Anne’s School, Windermere. In 1990, the school changed its name again to Windermere St Anne’s and the final alignment with the community came in 2010 when it became Windermere School.

Today, Windermere School is nestled on a hillside within 45 acres of the Lake District National Park, a landscape that has been the inspiration for world-famous artists, poets, and authors, a sanctuary and the antidote to congested city life, a fascination to scientists, a home for adventurers as well as part of the masterpiece of human creative genius that affords us World Heritage status. It is a daily inspiration to every one of us fortunate enough to call it our school. Windermere School spreads over three woodland campuses, Elleray Campus the home of our Junior School, Browhead Campus where our Senior School is located and Hodge Howe our private Watersports Centre on Lake Windermere. These contain all of our academic, boarding and sporting facilities.

How many children really know at the age of 15 or 16 what they want to spend the rest of their lives doing? And yet, in the UK at that age they are often asked to reduce their study options down to three or four subjects.

During Sixth Form at Windermere School pupils study the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB), an internationally recognised qualification that takes the place of other qualifications in England, such as A-Levels.

The objective of the IB is to encourage breadth and Balance as well as depth across the curriculum, ensuring that pupils do not specialise too narrowly before they go to university. Through the IB our Sixth Form are equipped with the ability to research and think critically, with the resilience and creativity to work through problems undaunted, an innate understanding of community and service to others, and a global mindset unhindered by physical or mental boundaries.
As an IB World School, we offer four Sixth Form pathways with the International Baccalaureate designed to challenge, extend, motivate and inspire. Students can be confident that the path they choose will equip them with the skills and results for success beyond the school gates:

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)
International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP)
National Level 3 Qualifications (standalone BTECs)
Standalone International Baccalaureate subjects (Certificates)

Our beautiful tiered theatre bears the name of Crampton Hall, dedicated to Miss Vera Crampton who came to Browhead Campus in 1928 to teach English and Latin, but whose greatest love was drama. Miss Crampton intended to stay at the school and teach for a couple of years but like so many that come here, she fell in love with the Lake District, and stayed for 64 years, becoming Principal, Proprietor and eventually handing the school over to a trust with its first board of governors.

Crampton Hall, which can seat up to 300, is where the school community meets for Reflection at the start of each day, and where the school’s annual show is performed. It boasts an impressive back stage area including the Drama Studio which is utilised for rehearsals. Recent performances include, Mary Poppins, Shrek, Grease and Legally Blonde. Pupils across all years are encouraged to get involved be it on the stage, in the lighting box, costume design or behind the scenes.

Our dedicated Forest School Programme is designed to develop articulate and confident children who are well prepared for their future education. By linking children to the world around them using a range of exciting outdoor activities, Forest School reinforces what they learn in the classroom.
Our teachers and qualified Forest School Leaders take on a facilitator role, giving children the freedom to guide their own activities. This enables them to develop their imagination, perseverance, communication, decision-making skills and self-confidence.

There are small trees to climb, magical places to hide, spaces for den building, secret passageways through shrubbery and a log circle for telling stories, singing songs and eating toasted marshmallows!

Our philosophy is simple; we encourage each child to develop at their own pace and according to their individual needs. We achieve this through a combination of child-led and adult-initiated activities, with staff that are passionate about helping every child to succeed in a happy and nurturing atmosphere. There is a genuine family feel in the Early Years Department, together with an incredible sense of fun and energy.

Using a practical learning-through-play approach, we ensure that these crucial developmental years are filled with wonder and new discoveries, in a warm and engaging environment. The garden allows the children to thrive in the natural environment, with inspiration from the beautiful views of Lake Windermere and Lake District fells beyond.

Children can join Windermere School from their third birthday. They will take part in a wide range of experiences: from music-making to watching the new born lambs in the adjacent meadow; from writing their own name for the first time to performing in the Nativity.

Children in Pre-School, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 take part in two 90-minute Forest School sessions each week. The focus is on woodland activities which start to nurture those ‘hard to measure’ life skills that are so important in children’s education; self-awareness, independence, motivation, confidence, empathy and determination.

Outdoor Learning takes the curriculum outdoors and into our amazing local UNESCO environment, whether that is the school grounds, our dedicated Outdoor Classroom or the wider area.

Pupils who experience an outdoor learning environment are more attentive, while consistent exposure to nature decreases stress and anxiety and helps elevate mood, contributing to a positive learning experience.

At Windermere School Geography becomes real, while Science is linked to the preservation and conservation of the environment or could mean heading to the Outdoor Classroom for a particularly explosive experiment. English might involve a trip to Rydal Caves to strengthen the use of ‘spooky’ adjectives, or taking a poetry lesson under the old oak trees. Learning in this way is more memorable, and allows our pupils to participate more actively in their own education.

Suitable for everyone from beginners to adrenaline hunters, ghyll scrambling involves travelling up or down a mountain stream with plenty of short climbs, slides and jumps to ensure that you are truly soaked by the end of the activity.

Ghyll Scrambling is an excellent team activity, naturally encouraging students to communicate and look after each other. As students get older the challenges increase and personal and safety skills are learned. Year 7 students, on their first Senior School residential trip, learn the skills required to safely launch themselves into deep water from a bridge, developing their resilience, communication and tenacity.

The Windermere School Adventure logbook encourages team and personal skills, and the journey through six stages and awards encourages students to try their best.

The Lake District may well be the birthplace of recreational climbing. It is a ‘sport’ that is extremely popular at Windermere School. Junior School students start scaling the local cliffs and climbing walls in Year 3. At Senior School we have a very popular climbing club with students learning to lead climb at the local climbing wall. Every October up to ten students travel to Spain for an amazing opportunity to develop their climbing skills. Older students begin to look after the younger ones in CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service section of the International Baccalaureate) or part of the Duke of Edinburgh award.

The Sports Department’s aim is to provide all students with the opportunities to enjoy, compete, and excel in a range of physical activities. This experience builds character, develops leadership skills, imparts core values, and develops an understanding of a healthy active lifestyle. We aim to motivate students to engage with physical activity throughout their lives, to instil in them the confidence to participate in physical activity, and to give them the knowledge and understanding that taking part in physical activity is important for their mental, social, and physical health.

In Key Stage 3, the girls have one single and one double lesson a week, and they are offered a programme of basic skills through Hockey, Fitness, Gym, outdoor games, Netball, indoor games, racquet sports, aqua Sports, Swimming, Athletics, Striking and Fielding, Cricket, Tennis, and Physical Literacy.

In Key Stage 4 and 5, a wider range of activities is available, encouraging participation outside of curriculum lessons and the School. For example, in addition to the usual team sports and activities, Sixth Form girls have the opportunity to take part in Zumba and Yoga, and they can exercise in the Gym. Girls also have the opportunity to do the Sports Leaders Award.

The bright and lively space that now houses our Art Department was originally the old carriage stables for the main house. It was where the first Speech Day at Browhead Campus was held in 1924, used as a gym, converted to science classrooms and is now a home from home for many of our young artists.

Pupils who choose to study art have the opportunity to try many different mediums of art including drawing, painting, print making, textiles, fine art, model making, photography and ceramics, using our dedicated ceramics space. The Art Department aims to foster a spirit enquiry in every child that steps through its doors and hopes to identify and develop not only a student’s natural abilities, leading to personal growth and development, but to also enrich the cultural life of the school.

The dorms, double and single bedrooms of Browhead House, are tucked away on the upper floors of our charming main building overlooking the lake.
Each age group has its own common room for relaxation, quiet areas for homework, and kitchens for weekend baking and mid-week evening snacks.
The Browhead boarders have a well-balanced schedule, with after-school sports and activities available every day until 5.30pm. After dinner, early evenings (during the week) are spent doing homework in quiet areas, where there are academic Tutors available to offer assistance.

Weekends are packed with sports fixtures, clubs, and activities to suit all interests. The school has a strong cohort of day pupils, who integrate well with our boarding students and take part in evening and weekend activities. It really is just like a giant sleepover.

The signature colours, which feature on our uniform, have been associated with Windermere School for nearly one hundred years. The inspiration for the characteristic design originated from the brightly coloured beach deckchairs at Blackpool, Windermere School’s previous location (at nearby Lytham), before moving to Windermere in 1924.

In the Junior School both boys and girls wear the striped blazer, however, to mark our heritage as an all-girls school, the boys swap to a navy blazer when they move up to the Senior School at the start of Year 7. Our Sixth Form are required to wear smart business attire as part of their preparation for life outside school.

There is a great social scene at Langdale House, with its large common room and timber deck, as well as smaller common rooms for each age group. Housemaster, Mr Mark Winter and his assistant, Mr Ryan Hill, have developed an atmosphere of both fun and structure. In the early evening academic tutors are at Langdale to offer extra tuition, which the boys find very beneficial. They are also able to participate in a host of extra-curricular activities.

Boarders are able to make the most of their time at Langdale House, forming lifetime friendships and gaining independence.

As in all the Boarding Houses full, weekly, and flexible options are available to suit family preferences.

Throughout the academic year and over each weekend we run activities and trips aimed at enriching the pupils’ lives and their boarding experience. Boarders enjoy a huge range of extra-curricular activities both after lessons have finished for the day, and at weekends. Clubs, sports, music practice, and voluntary work are all part of life at Windermere School, and there is also plenty of time just to relax and be with friends.

Weekends are filled with activities and trips, many of which day pupils are also invited to get involved in. Biking, climbing, ghyll scrambling, walking and film nights are firm favourites, but, depending on the time of year, we might also pop into Windermere town to take in a local Christmas market and enjoy a spot of ice-skating or head to the lake for a paddle.

Evening entertainments such as discos, barbecues, quizzes and karaoke are a regular feature, with everyone encouraged to join in the fun and games.

We are all aware of the profound psychological, emotional and physical benefits of spending time in the fresh air. However, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average individual spends 87% of their life indoors, plus another 6% in a vehicle. That’s only 7% of your entire life spent outdoors. Many children spend their schooldays indoors under fluorescent lights and in front of computers, then return home to bask in the glow of television screens.

At Windermere School we seek to provide the perfect physical and mental setting, allowing students to escape the everyday pressures and walk, run, play, learn or simply be, within our glorious surroundings. Our innovative Adventure and Outdoor Learning Programmes nurture those ‘hard to measure’ life skills that we believe are so important in children’s education: self-awareness, independence, motivation, confidence, empathy and resilience. It allows each of our students to push their personal boundaries, problem solve, and develop a growth mindset.

Westmorland House is a place for study and socialising. By day, Sixth Form students can choose to eat both breakfast and lunch in the House, debate issues sparked by their IB studies or current affairs with their friends or relax upstairs on the sofas. During boarding hours, the common room becomes a vibrant communal room, where students from a variety of cultural backgrounds can cook, play games and gather together, creating those long-lasting friendships that are such an important part of the boarding experience.

The social life in Sixth form is varied with lots of choice. It affords the perfect opportunity to develop the independence students will need for university or life beyond school, whilst also being a supportive atmosphere in which students are free to be themselves and learn about different aspect of their still developing personalities. The Snow Ball and Leavers’ Prom are annual highlights, whilst birthday and pizza parties, quiz evenings, movie marathons and gaming tournaments are more regular occurrences.

From horse riding and go-karting, to climbing, wild swimming, shopping and cinema trips, there is something for everyone.

With adventurous learning at the heart of our Junior School provision, children learn vital skills that they take back into the classroom, as well as through life. Whether they are taking part in Forest School, Adventure lessons, performing on the outdoor stage, or studying wind speeds at the top of a Lakeland fell, there is always challenge, fresh air and enjoyment. There is a warmth, vibrancy, and kindness at our Junior School located on the Elleray estate, that makes it a very special place to learn and grow.

Our unique and inspirational Lake District setting overlooking Lake Windermere, immerses pupils in nature allowing them the space to learn and flourish. This is a place where children can be children, with plenty of time to explore, play, and find their own magic through learning, both indoors and outdoors.

Linking children to the world around them reinforces what they learn in the classroom. Windermere School gives pupils the freedom to develop their imagination, perseverance, communication, and decision-making skills, helping to foster a sense of responsibility and self-confidence that will last a lifetime.

The outdoors is as important as the indoors and both environments complement each other with natural resources and places in which to play, learn and discover. We are lucky enough to have a private Watersports Centre on the edge of Lake Windermere which the children use regularly from Year 3 onwards.
