At Channing Junior School, we offer an enriching and exciting syllabus beyond the confines of a rigid curriculum. Creativity and innovation are developed from the Early Years and across Key Stages 1 and 2.

Girls are mostly taught in their form groups until Year 2. From Reception, they receive specialist teaching in Spanish, Music, Drama, PE and Forest School (from the Spring Term). In Key Stage 2 (Years 3 – 6), the girls also receive specialist teaching in Forest School (Years 3 – 4), French, Art and Design Technology.

The curriculum is enhanced by an extensive number of trips and visits, including the much-anticipated residential trips in Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. The girls in Year 3 also eagerly await the one-night sleepover within the school grounds. We strongly believe that learning does not just take place in the classroom and that girls must be inspired to take advantage of all the opportunities they are offered. This is why the PE curriculum is enhanced with off-site swimming lessons (for pupils in Year 2 – 4) and watersports lessons (for pupils in Year 5 – 6) to provide the best education that Channing Junior School has to offer.

Brunner House is at the heart of the School. It overlooks the quad where pupils and staff gather at break and lunchtime to meet, chat or just enjoy some fresh air and the stunning views over North London. Twelve classrooms flank spacious corridors over two floors and Brunner House is home to Year 7 pupils’ Form rooms and classrooms for Humanities including MFL, English, Geography, History and RE. It is also where the Head of Year 7’s office is. She is always on hand for any queries or if a new pupil just wants to talk through something.

Channing is a happy, purposeful place of intellectual enquiry and personal discovery for girls aged 4 to 18.

While we enjoy the benefits of our location in Highgate, we are not what you might expect from a North London girls’ school.

We are proud of our academically challenging and balanced curriculum which is delivered by committed staff, through inspirational teaching methods and the innovative use of technology. This is enhanced by a co-curricular programme of activities, trips and speakers designed to broaden the mind. What really sets us apart is our underpinning Unitarian values of free thinking, acceptance and inclusivity, which are encapsulated in the Channing Promise of kindness and respect. You will find Channing is a school where each individual is encouraged to understand their strengths and learn to mitigate their weaknesses, using their time at school to develop their skills and enjoy their success, however they may define it.

To learn more, please visit one of our Open Days. I look forward to meeting you and giving you the opportunity to discover Channing for yourselves.

Fairseat Hall is a versatile space at our school that serves multiple purposes. It's where our students come together for lunch, perform school assemblies with parents, participate in extracurricular and co-curricular activities, and even engage in sports lessons. With its flexibility and functionality, Fairseat Hall is an integral part of our Junior school community.

We have a dedicated Catering Team who provide the girls with freshly prepared food in our new multi- purpose hall and kitchen. There is a focus on the purchase and preparation of fresh ingredients that are sourced locally wherever practical. The girls have a choice of hot, cold and vegetarian dishes. Desserts offered include yogurts and fresh fruit. The girls are encouraged to fill up their water bottles and drink water so that they can stay hydrated. Several days a week are meat free, as requested by the girls to reduce environmental impact and to live a healthier life. The weekly menu is displayed in Fairseat Hall and is also on the school website:

Our Philosophy

Although we enjoy the benefits of our location in Highgate, we are not what you might expect from a North London girls’ school.

For Channing, the words ‘Girls Enjoying Success’ are so much more than a mere strapline; they are the shorthand for the unique educational philosophy that we offer. From the ages of 4 to 18, we inspire our students in a liberating and contemporary way, without undue pressure:

Our Unitarian values of free thinking, acceptance and inclusivity mean that every member of the school is valued and championed as part of the close and supportive Channing ‘family/community’

Through inspirational teaching methods, we encourage our girls to become fearless and resilient learners

We embed a “10% braver” approach to life to empower girls in every endeavour

The ‘Channing Experience’ provides a stimulating and vibrant range of academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities, designed to broaden the mind

Our girls (and staff) are both interesting and interested, aware of and engaged with the world around them

Always a visionary school, we aim to consistently be relevant, outward and future-facing: our research programme means that we are able to provide the best opportunities for our students, preparing them to thrive in life at Channing and beyond

Our examination results bear testament to the academic success of our educational philosophy, coupled with the depth and breadth of university destinations and courses onto which our students are accepted. Above all, our objective is for girls to enjoy their Channing education, celebrating their own and others’ success, by their own definition. Together, these elements combine to provide the perfect education for girls in the 21st Century.

Our school places a strong emphasis on physical education, providing our girls with two PE lessons per week and access to extensive sports facilities. Our curriculum for PE begins with field games, movement lessons, and dance, progressing to a variety of sports including netball, cricket, football, unihoc, athletics, rounders, and basketball starting from Year 3.

In addition, we believe in the importance of swimming as a valuable life skill, and therefore, girls in Years 2-4 swim at a local pool. Furthermore, during the summer term of Year 5 and 6, our girls have the unique opportunity to learn how to sail and kayak at a local watersports centre.

We are also proud to offer our girls numerous opportunities to participate in inter-school fixtures and competitions, promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy competition. Our holistic approach to physical education ensures that our students develop not only their physical abilities but also their mental and social well-being, fostering a lifelong love of physical activity and healthy living.

Our seven purpose-built, fully equipped Science laboratories allow pupils to have first-hand, practical experience in all of their Science lessons. An engaging and informative curriculum covering the essentials of Biology, Chemistry and Physics is delivered at KS3, with all pupils going on to study the three Sciences separately at GCSE level. To complement their studies pupils engage with a range of extra-curricular opportunities including competitions, lectures and peer-led workshops.

Outdoor Learning offers a wide range of educational benefits that support the growth and development of our students. Through outdoor experiences, our girls develop resilience, self-esteem, and confidence while also enhancing their problem-solving skills and ability to assess risk. Furthermore, it fosters creativity and nurtures a strong connection with nature that promotes a deeper appreciation for the environment.

At our school, we fully recognize the value of outdoor learning and provide ample opportunities for our students to engage with nature. Our outdoor learning areas, including the mud kitchen, outdoor classroom, and pond, are utilised in various innovative ways to complement the curriculum and co-curricular activities. These spaces provide a unique and stimulating environment that encourages our girls to explore, discover and learn through hands-on experiences.

The Music Department is a buzzing and exciting part of the school where we nurture, foster and encourage potential. Throughout the year, there are many musical opportunities to challenge and stimulate our girls, as well as for them to enjoy.
We have a comprehensive and systematic curriculum in place which includes ukulele and recorder playing. All girls in Key Stage 2 sing in the school choir and Key Stage 1 girls have the opportunity to take part in a string group experience. We also provide extensive extra-curricular activities with our dedicated and specialist team of Visiting Music Staff. Ensembles include brass, woodwind, strings, and the challenging, vocal ensemble. Almost half of all Junior School girls enjoy weekly one-to-one music tuition and celebrate examination success with the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music. Year 6 pupils often secure places in the National Children’s Orchestra and at specialist Saturday morning music schools.

The Music School provides a friendly, enthusiastic and stimulating environment in which musical excellence is encouraged and celebrated. We help our students develop their musical potential and respond to a variety of musical challenges. Students are given the opportunity to perform individually and in ensembles – irrespective of age or musical ability. Our facilities are fabulous and include 13 practice/teaching rooms. Often all rooms are in use, and the place literally ‘buzzes’ with musical activity, even as early as 8 o’clock in the morning! All our rooms are equipped with high quality upright pianos, mainly Yamaha or Kawai models. Our fully soundproofed percussion studio is a superb place for our rock bands to make music and, for those interested in technology, our Music Technology room is equipped with 23 iMacs and full-size Yamaha keyboards. Each week, we have 27 co-curricular musical activities from Theory Club to Jazz Band and on most Fridays, we have ‘Music at Lunchtime’, in which pupils of any standard have the opportunity to play or sing a solo, whether they have their music lessons in or out of school. You can also watch some of our latest concerts here.

The Sixth Form is the pinnacle of your Channing career and is a liberating experience. Class sizes are smaller, which allows you to forge a closer relationship with your teachers. You can explore ideas and topics within your subjects, which you may not have had the chance to do before. On a personal level, you have the freedom of not wearing a uniform, and the responsibility of meeting deadlines and managing your time effectively.

The opportunities in Sixth Form are endless. From day one you are encouraged to explore areas that interest you, be it volunteering for a charity, taking part in a work experience placement, attending careers talks, running a club or making a suggestion for a new enrichment rotation.

The Sixth Form Centre is set apart from the rest of the school, which fosters an independent and calm atmosphere. It’s away from the hustle and bustle of the main school; the modern classrooms and study areas allow you to immerse yourself in your work. However, moving into the Sixth Form isn’t just about studying.

We are a tight-knit community and spend time socialising with everyone. You will often find yourself making toast in the Sixth Form kitchen chatting to students in both year groups.

Leadership roles in the Sixth Form make us feel as though we are making a difference in the Channing community. These roles are coveted from an early age. It’s not unusual for pupils in Year 7 to aspire to be one of the officers.

Channing has a fantastic Careers Department and we are encouraged to seek work experience and advice well before we reach the Sixth Form. In the Sixth Form, the careers pathway develops. There are regular talks from people outside of the school who are trailblazers in their field. These are very useful as they provide greater insight into careers that may be appealing. Although we have yet to go through the UCAS application process, we have seen the support Channing gives to the Year 13 students. We know that our teachers and tutors will do everything they can to ease the stress and give you the help to achieve your full potential.

Personal and social development – improving communication skills, working with others.
Physical activity and movement – fine and gross motor skills development.
Resilience – problem solving and persistence.
Confidence – self-esteem, positive attitude, taking more risks, showing initiative, intrinsic motivation.
Wellbeing – fun and enjoyment, restoration, stress reduction.
Cognitive impacts – knowledge and understanding about the world around them and respect for their environment.
