BACON THEATRE


Our large, modern theatre was constructed to a very high standard, full of state-of-the-art facilities and seating an audience of 550 people. It is named after Mr Christopher Bacon, headmaster of Dean Close School from 1979-1998, who fundraised tirelessly to build his dream. Below the large stage sits a green room served by two staircases leading up to the stage, in addition to an orchestra pit. The theatre is used to its fullest, with its many school drama productions, assemblies, guest speakers, as well as hosting a large range of private hire shows and concerts.

On joining Dean Close, Day pupils join a dedicated Day House which is run by a Housemaster or Housemistress (HsMs), aided by a team of tutors. All day pupils use the Day House Village as their main social and pastoral unit. GIRLS' AND BOYS' DAY HOUSE


Every day pupil is accommodated in a House of around 70 to 80 children, where they can relax and play away from the busy routine of the school day. The PDT workshop sits at the heart of the school, fully equipped with traditional tools and modern machinery including a laser cutter, CNC router, and 3D printers. Small group sizes and close staff support, including a dedicated technician, ensure pupils learn to use equipment safely and skilfully. The space empowers pupils to bring their design ideas to life and develop real-world making and problem-solving skills.

The Wellbeing Hub is a multi-sensory space where pupils can take timeout during the day. The low lighting, background music, variety of stress-relieving activities and the availability of key pastoral staff mean that the Hub is a space where pupils can recharge and talk to someone if they are feeling overwhelmed. The counsellors are based in the Hub and can be seen by appointment or as a drop in as required. Pupils are always welcome to the Hub!

The large, airy dining room can accommodate the whole school in one sitting meaning everyone can dine together. Whilst it is used daily by pupils and staff for breakfast, lunch and dinner it also hosts buns (morning break), match teas, formal dinners, balls, quiz nights and much more. Our dedicated Catering Team is always on hand to help make the whole dining experience fun and enjoyable. Our qualified chefs put their global experience into creating beautiful, tasty food for all to enjoy.

The open-plan downstairs area provides a common room for each house. This is a comfortable and safe place for day pupils to base themselves during the school day. Each house has extensive comfy seating, TV and audio systems, dining facilities and a full fitted kitchen. Upstairs there are separate study areas for the junior forms and sixth form.

This is the common room for Fawley House, a large, detached Victorian building on the edge of the school grounds. Around 54 girls live in this house, in a combination of dormitories and single rooms.

This room, used by junior forms, sits on the upper floor of the art school where all the 2-dimensional work takes place. Next to this room sits a dedicated sixth form space with individual carousels for each A level student. There are also two more studio spaces for painting. Downstairs is exclusive to 3-dimensional work and photography.

Visitors enter through the Art School through the BonBernard Gallery, which hosts diverse exhibitions year-round, showcasing pupil work by year group alongside pieces from local artists, including photographers, painters, sculptors and Old Decanians.

At the heart of our purpose-built school sits the main hall, a light and spacious room that is used throughout every day. All the children gather together for regular assemblies in addition to classes for PE, dance, choir, music and movement, workshops and much more. The children also use facilities across the Dean Close site for tennis, swimming, tag rugby and forest school.

Children in Key Stage 1 benefit from a high teacher-to-pupil ratio which helps create a safe and happy learning environment. They are taught mainly by their class teacher, with specialist teachers in the subjects of French, Music and PE. All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have a weekly swimming lesson in the School’s indoor pool, as well as receiving tennis lessons.
