Barton's Chair
The central atrium is dominated by a hanging sculpture showing Barton’s Chair, one of the shapes adopted by the cyclohexane molecule.
Cyclohexane is a carbon ring molecule and can either exist in a chair or a boat shape.
Both the sculpture and the Science Centre are named after an Old Tonbridgian Sir Derek Barton (MH1932 to 1935) who shared the Nobel prize for Chemistry in 1969 for his work on the shapes of cyclohexane.
The sculpture is 8 billion times life-size and combines a scientific model of a molecular structure with a human call for connection and cooperation.
Images of the different shapes of a cyclohexane molecule are echoed in the metal panels on the outside of the building.
